Kevin Feige Confirms Some Original X-Men Stars Are Returning to the MCU After ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

Marvel’s mutant reboot has been one of the most closely watched transitions in the studio’s history, largely because it involves quietly retiring a beloved cast that spent over two decades defining these characters on screen. Fans have spent months trying to piece together exactly why Marvel chose to move on from the Fox-era actors rather than folding them permanently into the new shared timeline.

That speculation has often centered on contracts, with many assuming Marvel’s decision to recast the X-Men was driven primarily by expiring deals tied to actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden, several of whom are set to appear one final time in “Avengers: Doomsday” before the franchise moves forward with an entirely new lineup. Kevin Feige has now pushed back on that assumption directly.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Feige addressed whether expiring 2025 contracts were the primary reason behind the studio’s decision to recast the X-Men rather than simply extend the current cast’s involvement. His answer suggested the situation is considerably more complicated than a simple expiration date driving the entire decision.

“I don’t even know all the contracts. I mean there are people who are attached for much longer than 2025 and will be a part of them [the upcoming films],” Feige said on the podcast, indicating that at least some original cast members remain contractually tied to the franchise well beyond the timeline many fans had assumed.

That comment complicates the popular theory that Marvel’s recasting decision was purely a logistical necessity forced by expiring deals. Feige has previously framed the studio’s approach to the X-Men as a broader creative “reset” tied to the events of “Avengers: Secret Wars,” rather than a straightforward reboot driven by behind-the-scenes contract negotiations.

Feige has repeatedly resisted using the word “reboot” when describing the transition, instead describing it as a reset built around collapsing the Marvel multiverse into a single timeline. That framing lines up with the 2015 comic storyline “Secret Wars,” which similarly dealt with the destruction and subsequent rebuilding of the Marvel multiverse, providing a narrative justification for introducing new actors into these iconic roles.

Several members of the original Fox-era X-Men cast, including Stewart, McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Marsden and Kelsey Grammer, are set to appear in “Avengers: Doomsday” this December, giving longtime fans one final send-off before the franchise transitions to its new cast. The upcoming “X-Men” reboot, directed by Jake Schreier and slated for a May 5, 2028 release, will feature an entirely new ensemble, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.

Feige’s comments about certain actors remaining “attached for much longer than 2025” leave open the possibility that some original X-Men performers could still factor into Marvel’s plans beyond “Doomsday,” even as the mainline cast shifts to new faces. Exactly which actors that includes, or in what capacity they might continue appearing, remains unclear based on Feige’s remarks.

That ambiguity fits into Marvel’s broader pattern of keeping its long-term plans deliberately vague, even as Feige has grown increasingly candid about the franchise’s direction in recent interviews. He’s previously teased that Marvel is thinking well beyond a single X-Men trilogy, describing a vision built around “sagas upon sagas” of unexplored mutant storylines still waiting to be adapted.

With “Avengers: Doomsday” arriving in December and the fully rebooted “X-Men” not landing until 2028, fans still have a considerable window to speculate about how, or whether, any original cast members might resurface within Marvel’s new mutant era. For now, Feige’s comments suggest the transition was driven far more by creative ambition than simple contract logistics.
