Kevin Feige Teases Whether ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ Could Ever Happen in the MCU

Marvel Studios has spent years carefully rebuilding its mutant corner of the franchise, moving piece by piece toward a future where the X-Men finally exist alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. That slow-burn approach has only intensified fan speculation about what happens once both teams are officially operating in the same cinematic universe.

With Jake Schreier’s ‘X-Men‘ reboot now confirmed and its young ensemble cast unveiled at D23, attention has quickly shifted toward the bigger question looming over the franchise: could Marvel actually adapt one of its most iconic comic crossovers and pit the Avengers directly against the X-Men? Fans have been asking variations of that question for years, especially as the mutants have steadily reentered the fold following Disney’s acquisition of Fox.

Kevin Feige has now addressed that possibility directly, and his answer leaves the door wide open. Speaking about whether an ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ style story could eventually make it to the big screen, Feige explained that the years of divided character rights that once limited Marvel’s storytelling options are now firmly behind the studio, telling Phase Zero, “Well what’s fun is it’s all possible now.”

That comment reflects a broader shift in how Marvel has been able to plan its stories since regaining the X-Men license. Feige elaborated further, noting that during projects like ‘Captain America: Civil War’ or ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ the studio had to strip out “dozens of characters” from the source comics simply because those characters belonged to other studios at the time. Now, as Marvel plots its upcoming storylines, that limitation has effectively disappeared.

That newfound creative freedom comes as Marvel continues laying groundwork for its mutant future well beyond Schreier’s upcoming film. During a recent Disney Worldbuilders panel at D23, Feige teased that the studio has no shortage of material to pull from going forward, pointing to the character’s decades of publishing history. “Having 85, almost 90 years of comic book history, there’s so many stories yet to tell,” he said, signaling that whatever comes next likely won’t be confined to a single reboot movie.

The current mutant roster taking shape for the MCU includes some notable young talent, with Kit Connor set to play Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver rounds out the cast as Mister Sinister alter ego Nathaniel Milbury, giving Schreier’s film a genuinely stacked ensemble to build from.

That new generation of mutants will officially arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028, positioned as a fresh start for the franchise following the events of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ Feige has previously confirmed that the studio plans to recast the X-Men entirely for this new era, even as legacy actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Hugh Jackman return for cameo appearances in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before that reset takes hold.

Whether that reset eventually leads to a direct ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ adaptation remains unconfirmed, but Feige’s comments suggest the creative building blocks are already in place. With the character rights no longer split across studios and Marvel actively planning years of future mutant-focused content, the pieces for a full-scale crossover event appear to be falling into position.

For now, fans will have to settle for speculation and Easter eggs as Marvel continues threading X-Men references throughout the current Multiverse Saga, building toward whatever comes after ‘Secret Wars’ resets the board entirely. Given how deliberately the studio has approached this integration so far, it seems unlikely Feige would tease the idea this openly without at least some version of that crossover eventually making its way to screen.

Do you think Marvel will eventually make an Avengers vs. X-Men movie?
