A surprising return has been confirmed for Dexter: Resurrection season 2, even though the character was killed off in the first season.

According to a set photo shared on X by executive producer Scott Reynolds, Krysten Ritter is back on set and will reprise her role as Mia LaPierre, also known as Lady Vengeance. The image shows Reynolds with Ritter during filming in New York City, confirming her return to the series.

The news comes after Ritter recently appeared again in another major franchise, reprising Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Now she is stepping back into the world of Dexter just months after her character was seemingly written out.

Dexter: Resurrection originally brought Michael C. Hall back as Dexter Morgan in 2025, continuing the story three years after Dexter: New Blood. The series takes place shortly after the events of that show and follows Dexter as he becomes involved with a secret group of serial killers operating under the radar.

Ritter’s character, Mia LaPierre, was introduced in season 1 as part of that group. She appeared in three episodes and was invited to a gathering hosted by billionaire Leon Prater, played by Peter Dinklage. Other killers at the event included characters played by David Dastmalchian, Neil Patrick Harris, and Eric Stonestreet, each with their own disturbing identities.

At first, Dexter did not target Mia. In fact, he formed a brief connection with her after discovering she focused on killing sexual predators who had escaped justice. However, he later realized she did not follow a strict moral code like his own. Because of that, Dexter arranged for her arrest rather than killing her himself.

After her arrest, Mia was later killed offscreen. The show presented her death as a staged suicide, arranged by Charley, played by Uma Thurman, who works as security for Prater’s secret network. The goal was to silence her before she could expose the group.

Even though her death seemed final, her return in season 2 raises questions about how the show plans to use her character again. One possibility is flashbacks, showing more of her time within the killer network. Another option is hallucinations or visions, something the Dexter franchise has used many times before with deceased characters.

Dexter Morgan himself has frequently been shown speaking with imagined versions of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, played by James Remar. These moments are a long-running part of the series, often used to reflect Dexter’s internal struggles and moral decisions. Because of that pattern, fans are already speculating that Mia could return in a similar way rather than being physically alive.

There is also the possibility that Krysten Ritter could appear in a different role entirely, although nothing has been confirmed by the production team.

Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection is now in production in New York City, having started filming on April 13. Alongside Ritter’s return, the new season is also adding several major new cast members. These include Brian Cox as the New York Ripper, Dan Stevens as the Five Boroughs Killer, Bokeem Woodbine as NYPD Captain Mixon, and Nona Parker Johnson as Fiona Mixon.

The series continues to expand its focus on a wider network of killers, building on the idea introduced in season 1 that Dexter is no longer operating alone in a world filled with other dangerous figures.

With familiar faces returning and new killers entering the story, season 2 is shaping up to continue the darker direction established in the first installment. However, the return of Mia LaPierre remains one of the biggest surprises so far, especially given how her story originally ended.

Dexter: Resurrection remains the only active series in the franchise following the cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin after its first season.
