Casting reveals for Marvel’s rebooted ‘X-Men’ have been landing one after another this month, and fans have been dissecting every scrap of information about the new mutant lineup. Few reveals have generated quite as much online chatter as the confirmation that Kit Connor, best known for his breakout role in Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper,’ will be stepping into the role of Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops.

That casting news alone was enough to spark plenty of debate, given how different Connor’s public image has been from the stoic, physically imposing field leader of the X-Men. Fans have spent weeks speculating about how the actor might visually transform for the role, comparing his casting to predecessors like James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, who each brought very different physicality to the character across previous film eras.

That speculation reached a fever pitch this week when a new photo of Connor working out in the gym began circulating widely online. ComicBook.com shared the image, noting that Connor appeared to be “getting into fighting shape,” a caption that immediately sent X-Men fans into a frenzy over what they assumed was direct evidence of his physical transformation for Cyclops.

Reactions poured in almost instantly, with fans flooding replies praising Connor’s noticeably bulked-up physique. One user joked that “the villains in the MCU better watch out,” while another quipped that his casting represented “one serious mutant glow-up” from his ‘Heartstopper’ days. Several comments leaned into the moment with plenty of humor, with one fan writing that his arm alone “could snap a neck.”

Despite the excitement, some fans quickly pushed back on the assumption that the photo had anything to do with ‘X-Men’ training at all. A fan account clarified that Connor appeared in the image alongside Mark Humphreys, identified as his personal trainer for the upcoming video game adaptation ‘Elden Ring,’ rather than Marvel’s mutant reboot.

That project, directed by Alex Garland, has been another major undertaking for Connor this year, and several fans in the comments echoed the theory that this particular gym session was more likely tied to that role instead. Whether or not the specific photo traces back to Cyclops prep, the physical transformation itself has still done plenty to shift public perception of Connor as a credible superhero lead.

Even fans skeptical about his casting when it was first announced have softened their stance somewhat in the comments, with some acknowledging that Connor’s noticeably increased muscle mass at least visually supports the idea of him playing a powerful mutant hero. Not everyone has come around, though, with some commenters still questioning whether his acting range or overall presence truly fits Cyclops’s traditionally rigid, tactically minded personality.

Connor’s casting as Cyclops first emerged in a Deadline report confirming Marvel Studios had selected him for the role following extensive meetings with director Jake Schreier and studio president Kevin Feige. He joins a growing ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, setting up one of the character’s most iconic comic book dynamics for the big screen.

Cyclops has a long cinematic history dating back to James Marsden’s original portrayal in 2000’s ‘X-Men,’ with Marsden reportedly set to reprise a legacy version of the character in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ even as Connor’s younger take prepares to lead the franchise’s rebooted future. Marvel’s new ‘X-Men’ is set for release on May 5, 2028, giving fans plenty of time to keep speculating about every training photo that surfaces between now and then.

Whether this particular gym session was for Cyclops or ‘Elden Ring,’ one thing is clear: Connor’s physical transformation has fans taking his casting far more seriously than they did a few weeks ago.

Do you think Kit Connor’s new gym photo is preparation for his role as Cyclops?
