Kit Harington Defends Joining HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Amid J.K. Rowling Backlash
HBO’s ambitious television adaptation of the Wizarding World has generated plenty of headlines since it was first announced, but not all of that attention has centered on casting reveals or plot details. Nearly every actor who’s signed onto the project has faced questions about working within a franchise so closely tied to J.K. Rowling, whose comments on transgender issues have made her a deeply divisive figure among longtime fans.
That scrutiny intensified again this week around one of the show’s newest additions. Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow in ‘Game of Thrones,’ recently joined the series’ second season as Gilderoy Lockhart, stepping into the role after original casting choice Nicholas Hoult exited the production citing scheduling conflicts following his own wave of backlash.
Speaking on NBC’s ‘Today’ show, Harington addressed the criticism directly, explaining his decision to join the project despite the ongoing controversy. He said, “I’ve been a lifelong Harry Potter fan,” describing how he first fell in love with the books as a child before rediscovering them as an adult, in comments reported by Today.
Harington went on to explain that he now listens to the audiobooks every single night as a way to fall asleep, describing the stories as genuinely important to him on a personal level. He also framed his enthusiasm for the television format itself, noting that a series adaptation allows the books to be explored in far greater depth than the original film franchise ever could, calling it an ideal format for a self-described “book nerd” like himself.
Harington’s connection to the role actually predates his casting in the HBO series. He previously voiced Gilderoy Lockhart in Audible’s full-cast audiobook edition of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” released in December 2025, giving him direct prior experience embodying the vain, self-obsessed celebrity author and Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
That character was previously brought to life on screen by Kenneth Branagh in 2002’s “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” film. Harington’s version will appear specifically in the HBO series’ second season, which adapts that same book and is expected to premiere sometime after the show’s first season debuts on Christmas Day.
Harington isn’t the only cast member who’s had to publicly address the controversy surrounding the project. Other actors attached to the series, including John Lithgow, have similarly faced questions about their involvement, with reactions among the cast ranging from open engagement with the criticism to more measured responses about separating the material from Rowling’s personal views.
The backlash largely stems from Rowling’s public stance on transgender rights, which has drawn sustained criticism from trans advocacy groups and prompted repeated calls to boycott projects connected to her work. HBO boss Casey Bloys has confirmed that Rowling remains closely involved with the television series in a creative capacity, a detail that has only intensified scrutiny of the production among those calling for a boycott.
That controversy has followed the show since its earliest development stages, with Rowling herself previously making light of boycott efforts on social media. The tension between the franchise’s enormous built-in fanbase and the ongoing criticism of its creator has become an unavoidable talking point for virtually every actor who signs onto the project, regardless of how they personally choose to address it.

With Harington now publicly explaining his own reasoning for joining the series, his comments add to a growing pattern of cast members navigating this same balancing act between personal fandom and public controversy.
