‘Joker’ (2019) was initially meant to be a standalone film without sequels. However, Warner Bros. planned for it to inaugurate DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental films separate from the DC Extended Universe. Director Todd Phillips expressed interest in a sequel despite the original intention.

By November of 2019, the sequel was confirmed in development, and in 2023 Gunn confirmed that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will not be a part of the mainline DCU, it will instead be released under ‘Elseworlds’ label, consistent with Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ franchise.

Soon after the sequel was announced it was revealed that Lady Gaga will be taking on the role of Harley Quinn alongside Phoenix’s Joker. Todd Phillips later explained that he cast Lady Gaga since he was familiar with her performance since he was a producer on ‘A Star is Born’ and her performance was simply magical.

Now Lady Gaga herself finally opened up on what to expect from her role, she explained that her version of Harley will be completely her own and authentic.

My version of Harley is mine and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters. What I will say is that I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before.

Despite the general population being fine with Gaga being Harley, a part of the fandom is highly skeptical both about her performance and about the fact that the movie will be a musical.

‘Folie à Deux’ is described as a drama set in and around Arkham Asylum, but specific plot details haven’t been confirmed officially. The cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson. The screenplay was co-written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set for release in the United States on October 4, 2024, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
