‘Law & Order: SVU’ Season 28 Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Jalen Brunson’s Debut and the Davis Family Secret Explained
Few shows carry as much history into a Thursday night as ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,’ the longest-running primetime drama in American television history. Season 28 Episode 5, titled ‘Forsaken,’ aired Nov. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC and arrived on Peacock the next day. Written by Justine Ferrara, the hour drew extra attention for its sports-star guest.
The season began Oct. 8 with ‘Volition,’ a premiere about a young woman who believed she was assaulted by three men, and a hung jury sent that case to a retrial. ‘Forsaken’ also lands one week before the landmark 600th episode, which brings Christopher Meloni back as Elliot Stabler.
A New Era Behind the Scenes
The series is now run by Michele Fazekas, its first female showrunner. Mariska Hargitay said she was proud of every showrunner the show has had, but “I really wanted a female showrunner,” as Hello! reported.
This episode also features a famous guest. NBA champion Jalen Brunson plays Detective Jay Madison, and NBC Chicago noted he has said watching ‘SVU’ is part of his gameday routine. He and Hargitay have formed a close friendship.
The Wedding Night Assault
The episode opens at the reception for Johnathan and Andrea Oakes, where two bridesmaids find an injured 16-year-old, Chloe Davis, on the washroom floor. Rollins determines she was sexually assaulted and that her head was struck against the vanity.
Benson and Rollins question Chloe’s stepfather, Rick, and her brothers. Benson notices marks on Chloe’s hands, and her mother cuts short an attempt to question the teen. Chloe offers only a few details: reddish hair, a white shirt and someone older than her.
Rollins tackles a red-haired man named George, who flees, and he admits he was nervous because he had illegal drugs from a caterer named Scott. Captain Curry questions Scott, who is on probation and denies assaulting anyone.

Rick, Madison and the Warrant
Chloe fails to identify her abuser and insists he was not at the wedding. Rollins learns that Rick is not her biological father and has a record of harassment, while Evan, her younger brother, once stabbed a teacher with scissors. That teacher also describes Rick as having a bad temper.
Benson meets Madison, who was involved in Rick’s earlier arrest on DWI and resisting-arrest charges. NBC Insider reported that he shares details from that arrest, including evidence tied to the assault weapon. After Benson gets a warrant, officers search the Davis home and find a punched wall and a knife.
‘Forsaken’ Ending Explained
Chloe finally tells Benson the truth: her older brother, Tyler, harassed a girl at the wedding. When she rejected him, he was humiliated, noticed Chloe watching and assaulted her. Bruno and Renee arrest Tyler.
At trial, the judge sets Tyler’s bail at $250,000 and issues a temporary order of protection. The defense tries to portray Chloe as a liar, and Rick testifies that Tyler has a good heart and that Chloe is difficult. Carisi argues Rick is simply protecting his son.
Chloe’s mother then reveals troubling information about Tyler’s temper, and Chloe says Evan is afraid of him too. Evan takes the stand and testifies that Tyler attacked Chloe, and Rick storms out of the courtroom. SoapCentral noted that the episode does not reveal a verdict.

Critical Reaction and What Comes Next
TV Fanatic’s reviewer said the episode went back to basics after the previous week’s fiasco, pairing a creepy, controlling stepfather with a girl afraid to name her stepbrother. The reviewer called young Evan the hero of the hour but wished the story had continued past his testimony.
The same review credited Rollins with much of the heavy lifting in building rapport with Chloe, so the case was not left to Benson alone. It also noted that the squad had to peel back the family’s layers little by little before reaching the truth.
Next week’s 600th episode puts the spotlight on Stabler and Benson. Hargitay is directing it, and she once recalled of Meloni’s exit, “I did not want him to leave,” according to Entertainment Now.
Was Evan the real hero?
