Lee Byung-hun Talks Front Man’s Future and Possible Squid Game Spinoff

Lee Byung-hun, the Korean actor who plays the mysterious Front Man in Squid Game, recently spoke about his character and what might happen next in the series.

The Front Man is the masked figure who controls the deadly games with a calm but cold attitude. As the show progressed, especially in the latest season and finale, we learned more about him—his sadness, doubts, and even some guilt.

Lee brings a quiet strength to the role, showing a man who seems empty inside because of his past. He follows strict rules and sometimes drinks whisky alone to cope. But the story changes when Gi-hun, the main player played by Lee Jung-jae, returns to the game with a mission.

Gi-hun wants to prove that people can be kind and selfless, which challenges the Front Man’s belief that people are selfish and don’t deserve kindness. The big question is whether the Front Man will start to doubt his role or stay loyal to the game.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lee opened up about his character’s growth and some key moments from the finale that fans have been talking about. This includes the Front Man’s mysterious meeting with Gi-hun’s daughter and a surprising encounter with the recruiter, played by Cate Blanchett, on the streets of Los Angeles.

Cate Blanchett’s appearance has led to talks about a possible Squid Game spinoff set in the U.S. Lee shared his ideas about how the game might work in America. He said, “Well, depending on the culture and local circumstances, I suppose the ambience and the arena and the specifics of the games could be a little different. There could be some U.S. elements in there.” Still, he believes that what makes Squid Game so popular worldwide is its universal theme about losing humanity. He added, “The essence of the Game would be the same.”

Fans are also excited about the chance to see more of the Front Man in a spinoff series. Lee revealed that he and the show’s director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, have talked about this idea for a while. He explained, “We both thought that the Front Man or the recruiter could be interesting for more story, because we haven’t really explored these characters in their entirety yet. Their backstory is still vague, and their character is still a little murky.” Lee is clearly interested in exploring this character more deeply and said, “As for your question, of course I’d be willing to star in it. The character has already been built and designed, and I’m very compelled by him. Just as the fans are curious to know more about him, I am too. That’s a story I’d be very willing to tell.”

Lee Byung-hun’s comments give fans hope that the Front Man’s story isn’t finished and that we may see more of this complex character soon.
