LEGO Is Reinventing Its Entire Super Mario Line, and the First Sets Look Incredible

LEGO’s Super Mario line has spent years building a loyal following with its interactive figure gameplay, letting kids scan bricks and watch Mario react in real time through a built-in screen. That format has defined the theme since its debut, but LEGO is now signaling a major shift in direction for where the partnership goes next.

The change comes as the current interactive figure format is expected to retire by the end of the year, clearing the way for something built around a more traditional LEGO experience. Several existing sets, including the current version of Bowser’s Castle, are also reportedly heading toward retirement to make room for what’s coming.

That replacement arrived this week at gamescom in Cologne, where LEGO officially revealed its first wave of Super Mario minifigure sets. The announcement marks a full pivot for the theme, moving away from the electronic interactive figures and toward classic minifigure-based roleplay, a format LEGO first teased back during MAR10 Day celebrations earlier this year.

Eight sets make up the initial lineup, spanning a wide range of prices and complexity. Mario’s Pipe Jump leads the pack as the most affordable option at $9.99, letting kids recreate Mario’s classic pipe entrance while using a lever to catapult a Goomba out of the way so Mario can grab his coin. Racing with Mario follows at $14.99, giving younger builders an early taste of the kart-racing sets included in the wave.

The lineup continues with Mario’s Beach Adventures at $19.99, Luigi & Bowser Jr.’s Race at $29.99, and Yoshi at Mario’s House at $39.99, the latter featuring a slide connecting a garden, bedroom, and kitchen for open-ended play. Bowser’s Rumbling Race steps things up further at $59.99, packing in a Bowser Bruiser, a Toad-driven Zoom Buggy, and a Goomba-piloted Biddybuggy, each with racing features like shell launchers capable of flinging fireballs.

Topping the wave is Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle, the most expensive set at $99.99, bringing together Fire Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and Koopa Troopa minifigures in what’s shaping up to be the flagship release of the collection. Rounding things out is Fire Luigi vs. Koopa Troopa Battle, pitting a fire flower version of Luigi against a Koopa Troopa in a smaller standalone confrontation.

Character variety is a clear focus across the wave. Mario alone gets multiple minifigure variations, including a standard version, a Fire Mario included with the Bowser’s Castle set, and a shirtless beach-ready Mario packed into the Beach Adventures set. Luigi, meanwhile, makes his first appearance in these new sets alongside the first-ever Bowser Jr. minifigure, giving longtime fans of the Mario Kart series a character they’ve been waiting to see get the LEGO treatment.

Goomba shows up as one of the most frequently recurring figures across the wave, appearing in four separate sets, a fitting nod given the character’s status as the very first enemy players encounter in the original ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Toad and Koopa Troopa also make multiple appearances scattered throughout the lineup, rounding out a cast that leans heavily on the franchise’s most instantly recognizable faces.

With the current interactive figure era winding down and this new minifigure-driven wave positioned as its direct successor rather than a side addition, LEGO appears to be betting that classic roleplay building will resonate more broadly with both longtime fans and newer collectors.
