Lilly Wachowski Just Revealed Where She Really Stands on 'The Matrix 5'

Legacy franchises rarely get resurrected cleanly, and few properties carry as much creative baggage as ‘The Matrix’. Warner Bros. has spent years quietly circling ways to extend the sci-fi saga, even as the filmmakers who built its entire mythology have moved on to other creative pursuits.

That tension has become increasingly visible as Drew Goddard’s long-gestating fifth installment inches through development. First announced back in April 2024, the project has remained shrouded in secrecy, with plot details, casting, and even the involvement of the franchise’s original architects still largely unresolved.

Now Lilly Wachowski has addressed that uncertainty directly. Speaking with Kim Masters on KCRW’s The Business, Wachowski confirmed she has little interest in returning to the world she co-created with her sister Lana, stating plainly that she’s “kind of done” with the franchise, according to The Playlist.

Despite that personal distance, Wachowski revealed that Goddard reportedly won’t move forward with the project without some form of approval from her and Lana. “And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not,” Wachowski said, according to The Playlist, adding that whether the sisters give that blessing “could be something that’s coming down the road, but it’s still unknown.”

Wachowski also indicated the door isn’t entirely shut on some level of involvement, even if directing isn’t part of the equation. She and Lana may still “stick our noses in a tiny bit” before ultimately deciding whether to grant their support, suggesting the sisters could weigh in on the project without taking creative control.

Goddard, known for writing ‘The Martian’ and directing ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, is attached to write and direct the new film, producing alongside his partner Sarah Esberg through their banner Goddard Textiles, according to Variety. Lana Wachowski remains attached in an executive producer capacity, a carryover from her sole directing credit on 2021’s ‘The Matrix Resurrections’.

Goddard has been notably tight-lipped about specifics, previously declining to confirm whether Keanu Reeves or Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, according to World of Reel. When pressed on the matter, Goddard reportedly offered only that he “can’t speak to that,” leaving fans to speculate about who might return from the franchise’s ensemble.

Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman previously framed the new film as an effort to honor what Lana and Lilly built over the past 25 years while giving Goddard room to bring his own perspective to the material, according to Variety. That balancing act, respecting the franchise’s legacy while charting new territory without its creators steering the ship, appears to be exactly the tightrope Goddard is now walking as he waits on the Wachowskis’ input.

For a franchise built on themes of control, autonomy, and resisting predetermined paths, there’s a certain irony in Warner Bros. needing permission from its own creators to move forward. Whether that blessing ultimately arrives, and what shape ‘Matrix 5’ takes if it does, remains very much unresolved.
