‘Little Women’ Star Emma Watson’s Makeup Artist Drops a Set of Glowing Close-Ups, and Hermione Has Never Looked Quite Like This
Emma Watson has spent years doing the opposite of what most former child stars do. Instead of chasing the spotlight, she has stepped back from it and let her rare appearances speak for themselves. That has made every new photo of her feel like an event.
The 36-year-old has mostly been out of the public eye since her last major film roles, making one-off appearances once every few months. In a rare interview last September, she said that stepping back had made her feel maybe the happiest and healthiest she has ever been. This year, though, her public calendar has looked noticeably busier than usual.
A new set of close-up portraits is now circulating online, and they are getting plenty of attention. The newly shared Emma Watson photos are credited to Katie Mellinger, the makeup artist who has worked with her on recent appearances. The portraits show Watson in tight, softly lit close-ups, with brown hair falling loosely over her shoulders and a pearl drop earring catching the light.

The images are quiet and unfussy. In one, Watson tilts her head toward the camera with a hand resting at her neck, her freckles visible through luminous skin. In the other, she turns in profile, showing a soft smoky eye and a rose-nude lip.
There is no red carpet backdrop or fashion house name attached. The focus is on the beauty work itself, which suits Mellinger’s role behind the scenes. For fans used to seeing Watson at distance or in motion, the portraits offer a rare, intimate look.
Watson’s 2026 has been far more visible than recent years. She attended W Magazine and Dior’s pre-Oscar dinner in March, her first event of the year, wearing a black-and-white tweed Dior set. Around the same time, she confirmed a public romance with Mexican tech CEO Gonzalo Hevia Baillères.
In June, she joined Prince William at a business forum for The Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife in London, where she took part in a panel on tackling environmental crime. Later in the summer she was seen in Venice, and a viral festival video showed her dancing to Chappell Roan. She has also been promoting her Renais gin line.
The biggest fashion moment came on September 19, when Watson attended the opening night gala for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. She wore a bespoke black recycled-velvet mini dress covered in real orchids and lilies, designed with her stylist Jared Ellner and Los Angeles florist Anthony Maslo. She paired it with a handbag and jewelry made from reclaimed glass.
Mellinger handled her makeup that night, keeping it minimal so the dress stayed the focal point, while Daniel Moon styled her hair. Photos Mellinger shared afterward drew comments from fans, including one user who wrote that Watson might be the most beautiful woman in the world. After the event, the live flowers were removed and pressed as keepsakes.
Watson’s reputation for sustainability-minded fashion helps explain the attention each new look gets. She has described fashion as a form of storytelling, and the living dress turned that idea literal. The new close-ups push in the other direction, stripping everything back to skin, eyes and a single pearl.
There is also the bigger backdrop of the ‘Harry Potter’ universe. HBO’s upcoming TV series released its first teaser trailer in March, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout as Harry, Hermione and Ron. Every glimpse of Watson now doubles as a reminder of the original trio, which keeps the interest high.
The appeal of the portraits is their restraint. They arrive without a press cycle or a premiere, just a collaborator sharing work she has done with a famous face. In an age of heavily staged celebrity imagery, that simplicity stands out.
It also fits Watson’s current rhythm. She appears when she wants to, and the rest of the time lets her collaborators and friends offer small glimpses. For fans, that makes each new image feel earned.
