Few Nicolas Cage roles have aged as well as Yuri Orlov, the charming, morally bankrupt arms dealer at the center of Andrew Niccol’s crime thriller. The 2005 film was never a blockbuster, but its cult following has only grown, and fans have spent years asking whether the gunrunner would ever return. The long-awaited ‘Lord of War‘ sequel finally has footage to show for itself.

The original was a modest performer when it arrived. It grossed $72.6 million at the box office and opened in third place with $9.39 million. Critical reception was mixed, with many publications praising Cage’s performance while others criticized the film’s lack of focus.

Now the follow-up, titled ‘Lords of War’, has its first trailer. Vertical released the teaser on Wednesday, giving fans their first look at Cage’s return as Yuri Orlov opposite Bill Skarsgård, and the film is set to open nationwide in theaters in the early weeks of the new year. The clip opens on a scorched patch of ground littered with spent shell casings and flames, setting a grim tone from the first frame.

The hook of the sequel is a generational rivalry. Yuri discovers that he has a son, Anton, played by Skarsgård, who is trying to top his father’s wrongs rather than stop them. According to the film’s logline, Anton is a ruthless mercenary determined to destroy Yuri’s legacy, setting up a violent battle between two war opportunists.

The story also moves the franchise into new territory. Where the original explored the international arms trade, the sequel shifts its focus to private military contractors and the increasingly blurred line between weapons dealers and the men who wage wars themselves. Anton launches a mercenary army to fight America’s conflicts in the Middle East, which puts the family business on a much more personal collision course.

The teaser also includes a line of dialogue in which a character asks whether they can at least talk about why someone wants to kill them. It is a darkly funny beat that hints the sequel may preserve some of the original’s sardonic edge.

Niccol is back to write and direct, coming off the live-action animation hybrid ‘I, Object’. He is joined by Cage, who also serves as a producer alongside Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi and Niccol himself. Skarsgård leads the new generation of the cast, with Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks and Greg Tarzan Davis also starring.

This will be the first time Cage and Skarsgård have shared the screen. It is also the first of Cage’s films to receive a legacy sequel decades after the original, a milestone that underscores how much the character has stuck with audiences. The pairing also gives the sequel a fresh star in Skarsgård alongside a returning icon.

The path to release has been anything but quick. The sequel was announced at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, with Skarsgård attached from the start. Plans shifted along the way, and the project ultimately came together in late 2025 when filming began, with Hoeks and Davis joining the cast around that time.

Vertical later picked up the film, and the distributor unveiled its first footage to exhibitors at CinemaCon before releasing the teaser publicly. That rollout shows the company is putting real energy behind a title that has spent more than 2 decades building a loyal audience.

Legacy sequels often arrive wrapped in nostalgia, but this one has a different kind of pull. The original earned a reputation as one of Cage’s best roles, and the premise gives the character a natural way to evolve rather than simply repeat himself. A story about weapons dealers confronting the next generation of war profiteers also feels timely, even as the film keeps its focus on family.

Whether the full movie can match the sharp tone of the original remains to be seen, but the first teaser has done its job by getting people talking. With Cage reclaiming one of his signature characters and Skarsgård stepping in as a worthy adversary, the stage is set for a tense reunion.
