Madonna, 67, Reveals the Movie She Regrets Making the Most
It is not unusual to see music stars try their luck in movies. Some, like Will Smith and Queen Latifah, managed to build strong careers in both worlds. But for others, their fame in music can make it very hard for audiences to see them as anything but simply themselves.
That was part of the challenge for Madonna when she stepped into the world of Hollywood movies. In an older interview, Madonna looked back on one of her most difficult film experiences.
While she had some success in projects like A League of Their Own, things did not go the same way with the 1986 film Shanghai Surprise. The movie, which also starred her then-husband Sean Penn, was supposed to be a fun adventure set in the 1930s.
Instead, it became known for problems behind the scenes. Madonna explained that the production felt disorganized from the start. “The director turned out to not know what he was doing,” she said. “We were on a ship without a captain, and we were so miserable while we were working on it that I’m sure it shows.”
She also opened up about how her personal life made things even harder. At the time, she had just married Penn, and everything still felt new and overwhelming. “I had just gotten married. It was still really new to me, and my ex-husband was really kind of railroading his way into the whole project,” she shared.
She added that she felt out of place and unsure of herself during filming. “I was so green. I just found myself in a situation where I felt completely bullied and out of control, and it was not pleasant.”
When the film came out, critics did not hold back. Many pointed out that the chemistry between the two leads did not feel natural, even though they were married in real life. The movie ended up being a failure, but it did not stop either of them from moving forward in their careers.
Madonna continued to grow as one of the biggest names in music, while Penn went on to win major acting awards. According to recent industry updates, Madonna is now working on a new dance album, while Penn is focusing more on directing after his latest success at the Oscars.
