Magneto’s New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Look Just Leaked Through an Unexpected Source
Movie marketing has changed a lot over the years, and sometimes the biggest reveals don’t come from a trailer at all. They come from a toy aisle.
That’s exactly what happened this past weekend, when the wait for a clear look at Ian McKellen’s Magneto in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ finally came to an end, not through Marvel’s own marketing, but through collectible merchandise unveiled during San Diego Comic-Con.
The character has been kept notably under wraps ahead of release, with trailers offering only brief glimpses of his return. That changed once Sideshow Collectibles and Hasbro began revealing their upcoming Magneto figures, giving fans their first full, unobstructed view of McKellen’s costume for the film.
The design leans heavily into red, marking a clear shift from the character’s previous cinematic looks. The figure features a tailored long-sleeved tunic, a belt fastened with an X-shaped buckle, matching pants, tall black boots, and a dramatic gray cape lined in burgundy, all built around a newly sculpted helmet complete with rolling eyeballs modeled after McKellen himself.
That level of detail extends to the Hot Toys 1/6th scale version of the figure, which stands roughly 11.8 inches tall and comes in both Collector’s and Deluxe editions, priced at $285 and $390, respectively. The pricier Deluxe version notably includes a display base featuring a battle-damaged Sentinel head, hinting at a confrontation between Magneto and the robotic mutant-hunters somewhere in the film.
Hasbro’s more accessible Marvel Legends line is also getting in on the reveal, offering its own take on the character as part of an Amazon-exclusive figure priced at $27.99, with pre-orders opening alongside the Comic-Con festivities and a release expected later this year. It marks Magneto’s first appearance in the Marvel Legends line built specifically around an Avengers film, despite McKellen having played the character since 2000’s original ‘X-Men’.
This particular costume also stands out as arguably the character’s most comic-accurate design to date, complete with the classic red-and-purple color scheme long associated with Magneto in the source material. It’s a notable shift for McKellen, whose past cinematic looks across the original ‘X-Men’ trilogy and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ leaned toward darker, more muted tones.
The timing of the reveal lines up with San Diego Comic-Con’s broader Marvel Studios presence this year, where Robert Downey Jr. and several cast members appeared during a Hall H panel alongside producer Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo. A new trailer shown to attendees reportedly focused primarily on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, leaving characters like Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X with only brief screen time, which likely fueled the appetite for a clearer look at their designs.
McKellen’s involvement in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ marks his first time playing Magneto within an Avengers-branded film after decades tied specifically to the X-Men franchise, following the character’s earlier teases in prior teaser footage where he appeared reuniting with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Fans have spent months piecing together what his role might look like within this new multiversal team-up, and the merchandise reveal has only added fuel to that speculation.
With Doctor Doom positioned as the film’s central threat, seeing Magneto rendered in such a heroic, comic-inspired costume suggests his allegiance in the story may lean firmly toward the side of Earth’s assembled heroes. Whether that translates into a larger role on screen remains to be seen once the film arrives later this year.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18.
