Mahershala Ali Says He’s ‘Done’ With Marvel’s ‘Blade’ in Blunt New Interview

Few unmade superhero movies have generated as much speculation over the years as Marvel’s long-gestating ‘Blade‘ reboot. What began as a triumphant Comic-Con announcement in 2019 slowly turned into one of the studio’s most publicized development nightmares, cycling through directors, writers, and release dates without ever reaching a camera.

Mahershala Ali has been at the center of that story from the beginning, patiently fielding questions about the character’s fate through years of delays. Over the summer, the two-time Oscar winner finally signaled he was ready to close that chapter, and now he’s making his position even clearer.

Speaking with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival, Ali delivered his most direct comments yet on the subject, stating plainly that he’s over the project and done with it entirely. It’s a blunt continuation of what he first suggested in a GQ interview back in July, when he told the magazine flatly that a reboot wasn’t happening with him attached.

Ali’s frustration with the situation has been building for a while. In that earlier GQ conversation, he pointed out that Marvel had him under contract for years, adding that the studio, despite its resources, simply chose not to move forward with the film. He made clear that if Marvel had truly wanted to make the movie, it would have happened by now.

The actor also used that interview to explain why he doesn’t regret how things played out. He noted that he couldn’t have taken on both ‘Blade’ and his new film, ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,’ and that the latter project only came together because ‘Blade’ fell apart in the first place. Director Bassam Tariq, who was originally attached to helm the Marvel reboot before exiting in 2022, ended up writing and directing ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ for Ali instead.

That silver lining extended even to the physical preparation Ali put into the abandoned Marvel project. He revealed that the sword training he underwent for ‘Blade’ ended up being directly useful for his role in the new film, allowing him to do his own stunt work for what he described as feeling like his first real action movie.

Marvel’s side of the story hasn’t exactly contradicted Ali’s account, either. Studio president Kevin Feige addressed the situation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, admitting he felt like a failure for not getting the project off the ground with Ali attached, and explaining that the script never reached the quality bar the studio was holding out for.

Despite the very public unraveling of ‘Blade,’ Ali’s relationship with Marvel isn’t completely severed. He’s set to return as the voice of Aaron Davis in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ a role he’s voiced since 2018. That continued involvement suggests his frustration is specifically tied to the mishandled live-action reboot rather than the studio as a whole.

For now, ‘Blade’ remains without a director, a finalized script, or any concrete path forward, years after Ali was first handed a symbolic sword on the Comic-Con stage. With his latest comments at TIFF, it’s clear the actor has no intention of holding his breath for that to change.

Whether Marvel eventually recasts the role or shelves the project entirely remains to be seen, but Ali has made it about as clear as possible that he won’t be the one waiting around to find out.
