According to a report from Variety, Man of Tomorrow is steadily expanding its cast as filming continues, adding even more familiar DC characters to an already large ensemble. The film is directed and written by James Gunn and serves as a direct follow-up to Superman (2025), continuing the new DC Universe storyline.

The story centers on an uneasy alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor. David Corenswet returns as Clark Kent, while Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Lex Luthor. In this film, the two longtime enemies are forced to work together when a much bigger threat emerges in the form of Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. The idea of cooperation between Superman and Luthor is one of the central tensions driving the story.

Rachel Brosnahan also returns as Lois Lane, continuing her role as Clark Kent’s partner and fellow reporter at the Daily Planet. Alongside them, several other heroes from the DC Universe are part of the growing cast, including Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. These characters form part of a larger superhero group that operates under the Justice Gang banner.

‘Supergirl’ Star Milly Alcock Addresses “Women in Fandom” Backlash, Says It Confirms Her Original Statement

One of the newest confirmed additions is Milly Alcock, who reprises her role as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. According to Variety, she will join the production in Atlanta as filming continues. DC Studios co-head Peter Safran spoke about her importance in the story, saying, “She’s a major part of what we’re doing.” While her exact role in the plot has not been revealed, her return suggests a deeper connection between Superman and his Kryptonian family as the story expands.

The film also features returning and supporting characters tied to Lex Luthor’s world. María Gabriela de Faría plays The Engineer, an ally of Luthor whose body is enhanced with nanotechnology. Sara Sampaio returns as Eve Teschmacher, while Frank Grillo appears as Rick Flag Sr., continuing his role as part of the larger DCU structure. Other cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and several actors in undisclosed roles, including Matthew Lillard and Sinqua Walls.

James Gunn first confirmed he was developing the sequel shortly after Superman entered production in 2025. The title Man of Tomorrow and early plot details were later revealed, with Brainiac confirmed as the central antagonist. Filming began in 2026 across Atlanta, the United Kingdom, and parts of the United States, and is expected to continue through mid-year.

The story takes place in a world where Superman is already established as a public hero, but new threats are forcing him into uncomfortable alliances. Lex Luthor’s involvement adds another layer of tension, since he is both a prisoner and a strategic mind who may be necessary to stop Brainiac’s larger plan.

The film is currently scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is part of DC Studios’ first major chapter titled Gods and Monsters, which is building a connected universe of films and characters.

As production continues, Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be one of the biggest ensemble entries in the new DCU, with more casting updates expected before the film wraps.
