Marvel Announces Untitled Film for December 2028, Sparking Speculation That Highly Awaited Movie is Already Getting a Sequel

Disney revealed on Wednesday that Marvel Studios has slotted an untitled movie for release on December 15, 2028. If the schedule holds, it would mark Marvel’s fourth film of that year, following releases planned for February, May, and November.

However, Disney often reserves dates as placeholders, adjusting as needed. For instance, Marvel’s Blade was delayed from November 2025 after Disney secured a slot for Predator: Badlands.

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently acknowledged Marvel’s overproduction issues during a May investor call, saying, “We all know that in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, that we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more.”

He added, “We’ve also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we’ve all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality.”

Fans are buzzing about what the 2028 film could be, with many guessing it might be a sequel to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set for July 2026. Others caution that sequels depend on the first film’s success.

Marvel’s 2026 and 2027 slate is leaner, with only two films in 2026, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (with Sony) in July and Avengers: Doomsday in December, and two in 2027, an untitled project in July and Avengers: Secret Wars in December.

Secret Wars is expected to close the Multiverse Saga, paving the way for stories featuring X-Men and other characters from 20th Century Fox, acquired by Disney in 2019. Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, will helm Marvel’s first mutant-focused film.

Familiar X-Men actors like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart may appear in Doomsday. Other potential 2028 projects include Blade or Black Panther 3.

Marvel’s decision to slow down and focus on quality over quantity is a smart move after a crowded slate diluted their impact. The 2028 mystery film has me intrigued, but I’d rather see a fresh story than a rushed Fantastic Four sequel. A mutant-focused film or Black Panther 3 could be exciting.
