Didn’t Catch ‘Thunderbolts*’ in Cinemas? The Latest MCU Hit Finally Gets a Digital & Blu-ray Release Date

Marvel’s latest movie, Thunderbolts*, is coming to digital and physical home release soon. Fans can watch it on video on demand starting July 1 on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
Then, on July 29, the film will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD, with special features such as deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes videos, and commentary from director Jake Schreier.
There’s no word yet on when Thunderbolts* will arrive on Disney+, but Marvel is also releasing collectible Blu-rays, including a SteelBook edition with custom artwork and a Walmart-exclusive version with pop-up art.
The movie is part of the MCU and marks the 36th film in the series. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts* stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and others. The story follows a group of antiheroes who find themselves trapped and forced to work together on a dangerous mission.
The idea of a Thunderbolts team was first hinted at by Marvel Studios in 2021. The film’s development was announced in June 2022 with Schreier directing and Pearson writing. The main cast was revealed in September, and more actors joined through early 2023. The script went through rewrites by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo.
Filming happened from February to June 2024 in Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur. Production faced some delays because of the Hollywood labor strikes in 2023, which also caused some cast changes.
Thunderbolts* premiered on April 22, 2025, in London and hit U.S. theaters on May 2, closing out Phase Five of the MCU. The movie’s ending revealed the Thunderbolts team would become the “New Avengers,” and Marvel started promoting the film under this new title shortly after its release.
Despite getting good reviews, Thunderbolts* didn’t do as well as expected at the box office, earning $380 million worldwide against a $180 million budget. Still, it became the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2025.
Critics generally responded positively to Thunderbolts*, praising the film for its strong cast and character-driven story. Florence Pugh stood out as a magnetic lead, and many appreciated the movie’s focus on a group of underdog characters, which brought a fresh take compared to other Marvel films.
The blend of action, humor, and emotional depth was also well received. However, some critics felt the film was a bit gloomy and found the plot somewhat complicated, with a few noting that it could have been more straightforward. Overall, audiences gave it good ratings, highlighting its entertainment value and strong performances.
