Marvel Assembled Its MVP Writing Squad for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Blockbuster filmmaking has long relied on the careful orchestration of creative voices working in tandem. When studios face the monumental task of bringing ensemble narratives to life, the writing room becomes ground zero for determining whether audiences will connect with sprawling, interconnected storylines or find themselves lost in narrative chaos.

The Avengers films, in particular, have demonstrated just how crucial it is to have screenwriters who understand both spectacle and intimacy, able to balance dozens of characters’ arcs while maintaining emotional coherence.

The stakes have never been higher for Marvel Studios. With the introduction of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as the central antagonist and the convergence of multiple universes, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ represents a pivotal moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s evolution. The film’s success or failure will hinge not just on action sequences and visual effects, but on whether audiences believe in the conflicts driving these characters forward.

Now, Marvel has unveiled the architectural foundation of that narrative. Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote all three Captain America movies, as well as ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, alongside Christopher Markus, is the lead writer on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and Michael Waldron is now co-writing the film with McFeely. Michael Waldron was the head writer and executive producer of the Disney+ series ‘Loki’ during its first season and the sole credited writer of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

The writing duo’s pedigree speaks volumes about Marvel’s commitment to this project. McFeely’s fingerprints are all over the MCU’s most beloved moments, having shaped the emotional crescendos of both ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ alongside Markus. Waldron, meanwhile, has become synonymous with the Multiverse Saga, architecting the thematic backbone of the MCU’s most complex storyline. Together, they represent a combination of blockbuster muscle and narrative sophistication.

But there’s more to the writing equation. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the scripts for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’. The duo scripted every Tom Holland ‘Spider-Man’ film, bringing their extensive work on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to the Avengers projects.

Their involvement signals Marvel’s desire to inject character-driven dynamism into the massive ensemble piece. McKenna and Sommers have proven their ability to weave character banter and emotional beats into action-heavy narratives—crucial skills when writing for an estimated cast exceeding 60 characters.

According to director Destin Daniel Cretton, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were recruited mid-production by Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers to assist with script development on both films. This strategic addition underscores a behind-the-scenes truth: even the most meticulously planned scripts need refinement when confronted with the practical realities of production.

The collaborative approach reflects Marvel’s institutional knowledge about what works in these massive ensembles. Rather than entrusting the project to a single creative voice, the studio has assembled a writers’ room featuring architects of the MCU’s past successes, each bringing distinct strengths. McFeely brings structural mastery and emotional weight, Waldron brings multiverse mythology and thematic coherence, and McKenna and Sommers bring character specificity and dialogue snap.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will be released on December 18, 2026. With this powerhouse writing team now in place, the creative foundation for what promises to be one of the MCU’s most consequential films has been solidified. Whether this assembly of screenwriting talent can deliver a narrative that honors the franchise’s past while launching it boldly into the future remains the central question facing Marvel’s next chapter.
