Marvel updates have been in full force in the last few days, and besides the live-action projects like ‘Fantastic Four,’ the announced animated project ‘X-Men 97’ got a major update. This upcoming animated television series will be the sequel to the iconic ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ that aired from 1992 to 1997. The new series will be the revival of the franchise and will continue where we let off more than 25 years ago.

The recent update for the new animated series included new cast members familiar to animated project fans. The cast includes Jennifer Hale (replacing Catherine Disher) as Jean Grey, Ray Chase (replacing Norm Spencer) as Cyclops Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Gui Agustini as Sunspot. Holly Chou (replacing Allyson Court) as Jubilee, and Christopher Britton will return as Mr Sinister to reprise his role.

The fans of the original animated series will be happy to hear that most of the original cast will return to reprise their roles, with Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, A.J. Locascio will replace Porter as Gambit, and Alison Sealy-Smith will return as Storm. This is great news for the fans since most of these voice actors were impeccable in the ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ and probably the best part of the cartoon.

It will be interesting to see which storylines will be featured in the ‘X-Men 97’ since the final season of the original series saw X-Men dealing with a threat mutant-hating humans who attack X-Men, and Beast teaming up with Warlock, Forge, Mr. Sinister, Amelia Voght, and Magneto to stop the imminent danger.

The season five also featured Jubilee’s special episode and Wolverine’s adventure with Captain America during World War II against Red Skull. According to ‘X-Men 97’ writers, the series will reflect modern-day society, like the original series did in the 1990s, and revolve around Professor X’s idea of mutant/human coexistence and peace.

The show will most likely start with the X-Men reunion and them joining forces following a major and influential event. This correlates with the old series, which featured some of the most notable comic book X-Men events like Dark Phoenix, and Age of Apocalypse.

The writers also revealed that the new series would follow X-Men after Professor X’s departure, and humans have more favorable feelings toward mutants. X-Men members will be at crossroads and will have to decide their new life paths. Besides usual X-Men members, Magneto will once again have a huge role in ‘X-Men 97,’ and it will be interesting to see his role in the aftermath of Professor X’s departure.

Nevertheless, the writers assured us that the new animated series would take the original ‘X-Men series’ positives and continue the X-Men members’ character development. Another great news is that we finally got the full confirmation when the series will be released – ‘X-Men 97’ will be released on January 3rd, 2024.
