Simu Liu’s road back to the MCU has been a long one, with the actor sitting on the sidelines for four years since his 2021 debut in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ That absence made his eventual return feel like a genuinely open question, especially since Marvel gave few details about how the character would fit into the studio’s next major crossover event.

That silence started breaking last year, when Liu began teasing his character’s evolution through cryptic social media posts and brief on-set updates. Fans quickly picked up on hints that something significant was changing for Shang-Chi ahead of his reintroduction, though the studio kept the specifics locked down for months.

Marvel recently posted the first proper look at Shang-Chi’s redesigned costume for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ confirming just how far Marvel pushed the character’s new look compared to his original dragon scale armor.

Marvel reportedly kept the redesign a total surprise from Liu himself, never telling him in advance they had decided to overhaul the familiar costume he wore in his solo film, making for quite the shock when he arrived on set to find it waiting for him.

Liu explained the moment, saying it was an incredible feeling to discover it was actually a brand new suit that fit on him very differently than his original costume. He described initially feeling confident walking onto set, only to see the new suit and its individual pieces and immediately realize this was not the same at all, later reflecting that it just goes to show things change, and that it was really special to look at himself in the mirror wearing something entirely new.

Shang-Chi’s original costume was primarily crimson red fading into black, built around a black leather chestplate that extended outward into shoulder pads with matching leather details on the upper arms. That original suit was forged from dragon scale armor sourced from Ta Lo and gifted to him by his mother’s people at the end of his solo film.

Reports have suggested the Ten Rings themselves could function as a critical plot device within Doomsday, potentially tied alongside other artifacts like Ms. Marvel’s bangles. Shang-Chi is expected to operate within Thor’s core Avengers roster for the film, standing alongside heavy hitters like Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Loki, Reed Richards, Bucky Barnes, and Yelena Belova.

What Do You Think of Shang-Chi’s New Costume in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Shang-Chi is far from the only hero receiving a redesign heading into the crossover, with leaked marketing material also revealing dramatic new looks for Namor and a return to a more traditional design for Loki following his transformation into the God of Stories. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ releases in theaters on December 18, and with Shang-Chi’s new costume now officially out in the open, fans finally have a clearer picture of just how much this next chapter is reshaping even Marvel’s most established heroes.
