Lewis Pullman’s Bob Reynolds was one of the most unexpected breakout characters to come out of Marvel’s Phase Five, turning what could have been a forgettable antihero team-up movie into one of the studio’s more emotionally grounded entries in years.

His journey from a fragile, unaware patient to the immensely powerful Sentry gave ‘Thunderbolts’ a genuine emotional center, and audiences responded to that vulnerability in a way that surprised even Marvel itself.

That reaction helped push Bob into becoming the breakout star of the ensemble, with his post-credits appearance showing him depowered and consciously avoiding his abilities out of fear he might reawaken his darker half, the Void. Fans have spent months since then wondering exactly how much of that internal struggle would carry over once he joined the massive ensemble assembling in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Marvel shared a new glimpse of that answer this week, posting fresh concept art offering a look at Pullman’s Bob in the upcoming film.

Pullman has previously teased that his Thunderbolts teammates plan to keep a close eye on Bob throughout Doomsday, working to find a way to harness what he described as the power of a thousand exploding suns without letting his inner darkness resurface. He explained that his allies see him as a very good asset despite the danger he represents, caught between wanting to keep him close in case they can find a way to use his power and fearing what happens if he falls into the wrong hands.

Speaking Deadline about his return to the role, Pullman said he could not believe he was allowed to be in the movie, calling the experience so much fun and expressing how lucky he feels to keep playing a character who means so much to him personally, adding that there is so much about Bob’s ethos that feels deeply personal to him.

He also confirmed that the New Avengers, operating out of Stark Tower alongside Bob, are eventually alerted to a mysterious ship in space belonging to the Fantastic Four, hinting at how the team’s storyline eventually connects to the film’s broader crossover.

Pullman originally stepped into the role after Steven Yeun departed the project, and the actor has said finding his own personal connection to Bob’s story, with guidance from Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier, helped him make the character his own despite the pressure of filling such a high-profile role on short notice. Given how much weight Sentry’s power carries in the comics, fans have continued speculating about just how contained his role will actually be once Doctor Doom enters the picture.

Are You Excited to See Lewis Pullman’s Bob Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Avengers: Doomsday reunites much of the Thunderbolts cast, including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Hannah John-Kamen, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and Tom Hiddleston. The film arrives in theaters on December 18, and with this new glimpse of Bob now in circulation, fans have one more piece to study as they try to predict just how much control he manages to hold onto once the fighting starts.
