Marvel Studios May Be Rethinking the Future of ‘Champions’ and ‘Strange Academy’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent the past few years in a constant state of recalibration, adjusting its approach to Disney+ programming after a string of shows failed to generate the same seismic impact as the studio’s theatrical output. Executives have been forced to rethink not just which stories get told, but the very format in which they’re delivered to audiences.

That reassessment has touched nearly every corner of Marvel’s upcoming slate, from team-up projects built around younger heroes to entirely new corners of the MCU’s mythology. Fans have watched with a mixture of excitement and skepticism as titles get teased, shelved, and revived seemingly on a rotating basis, making it difficult to know what’s actually coming next.

Now, that uncertainty has resurfaced around two of Marvel’s most talked-about future projects. According to a new report, Marvel Studios is reportedly considering turning ‘Champions‘ and ‘Strange Academy‘ into movies rather than Disney+ series, a potential format shift that would mark a significant departure from earlier plans.

This wouldn’t be the first time these two properties have faced this exact fork in the road. Marvel Studios paused its plans for ‘Nova’ and ‘Strange Academy’ as TV shows last year, and a previous update suggested the studio was mulling over whether they should remain streaming series or become movies instead. That earlier moment of indecision seems to be echoing again now, with ‘Champions’ newly added to the conversation.

As recently as this year, however, the assumption was that both projects were locked in as television. According to Daniel Richtman, the planned ‘Champions’ and ‘Strange Academy’ Disney+ shows were expected to take place after ‘Secret Wars’ and could run for multiple seasons. That framing painted both properties as long-term streaming investments rather than one-off cinematic events, making this latest movie speculation a notable reversal if it holds up.

‘Champions’ has had its own winding development journey, having originated under a different name entirely. The project began as a ‘Young Avengers’ concept before undergoing a rebrand, with reports indicating that the studio had an eye on beginning production in 2026 to have it ready for a post-Secret Wars release, though given Marvel’s desire to move to only two streaming projects per year, it likely wouldn’t have been released until the second half of 2027 or even 2028. That kind of extended timeline may have factored into the studio’s willingness to reconsider the format altogether. aol

Even Marvel’s own leadership has been cautious about committing to specifics regarding the team-up project. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, when asked about plans for the Young Avengers, said, “Potentially. In that case, it comes down to where’s the best story and where is the best strange alchemy. Who would be fun to see them with? Each other, because that’s what the Young Avengers are, but also mixing it up more,” told to press earlier this year.

‘Strange Academy’, meanwhile, carries its own layered history behind the scenes. Reports indicated Marvel Studios was actively searching for a new writer to bring the magic-focused series to life following an earlier pause in development. The property, centered on a school for young sorcerers founded by Doctor Strange, has long been viewed as fertile ground for expanding the MCU’s mystical corner, regardless of whether it ultimately lands on the big screen or the small one.

What makes this potential pivot particularly interesting is the format flexibility both projects seem to carry. Neither ‘Champions’ nor ‘Strange Academy’ has been rigidly defined in its storytelling ambitions, giving Marvel room to maneuver as it continues reassessing its post-‘Secret Wars’ strategy. Given the studio’s well-documented struggles translating ensemble hero teams to streaming success, a theatrical approach could offer a cleaner path to establishing these characters with wider audiences.

For now, nothing has been officially confirmed, and Marvel has remained typically tight-lipped about specifics for either project. But the possibility that these two team-driven stories could be reformatted as films suggests the studio is still actively shaping what its next generation of heroes will look like on screen.
