Marvel Studios Reportedly Searching for a New Black Panther in the MCU – Here are the Top Contenders
Marvel Studios is reportedly starting early discussions about casting a new Black Panther for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The information comes from insider reporting by Alex Perez, who responded to fan questions about the future of Wakanda and the direction of the franchise.
When asked about whether Secret Wars could introduce multiverse versions of Wakandan characters, Perez did not confirm those details. However, he did suggest that Marvel is actively thinking about the next person to take on the mantle of Black Panther.
He stated, “I cannot comment on this, but I know that they’re actively looking for the next Black Panther as we speak. And there are a couple of names that have been thrown around.” He also mentioned that actors John David Washington and Damson Idris are among those being discussed for the role.
Perez added another name that has come up in conversations, saying Lakeith Stanfield is being considered for a different Marvel project, not Black Panther, and hinted it is something “bluer,” without giving further detail.
The report does not confirm any official casting decisions from Marvel Studios, and there has been no public announcement from the studio about recasting the character. Still, the discussion reflects ongoing speculation about the future of the role after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, took on the mantle following the death of T’Challa in the story.

Since the release of the sequel, Marvel has kept development plans for Black Panther 3 mostly quiet, although multiple updates over the past few years have confirmed that the franchise is expected to continue. Director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige were reported to have discussed ideas for a third film as early as 2022.
Later updates suggested that the cast and creative team would take time before returning, allowing space to develop the story properly. In 2024, Coogler was also linked to discussions with Denzel Washington about joining the franchise in a future role, adding more attention to the direction of the next installment.
By mid-2025, Coogler confirmed that Black Panther 3 was officially in development and would be his next film project. The movie is currently expected to arrive in 2028, though Marvel has not released detailed story information.
For now, the idea of a new Black Panther remains unconfirmed, but the latest insider comments suggest that casting conversations are already happening behind the scenes as Marvel prepares the next stage of the Wakandan storyline.
