Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts*’ Opens Strong with $162 Million Globally
Thunderbolts* had a big opening weekend, earning $76 million in the U.S. and Canada. Around the world, it made $162 million total, with $86 million coming from international ticket sales.
Before it came out, experts predicted the movie would earn about $70 to $80 million in its first weekend. So far, it’s hit those expectations. The movie reportedly cost about $180 million to make.
Its opening weekend surpassed other recent Marvel movies:
- “Eternals” (2021) opened with $71 million
- “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” earned $75 million
- “Captain America: Brave New World” made $89 million earlier this year
Also, the positive reviews for Thunderbolts* could be a good sign for future Marvel films, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is coming later this summer.
This spring has been a strong one for movie theaters. After a slow start to the year, things picked up in April:
- “Minecraft: The Movie” opened with a massive $157 million in the U.S.
- Ryan Coogler’s film “Sinners” made $48 million in its first weekend and continues to do well.
According to Shawn Robbins, a film analyst and director at Fandango, the wide mix of movies is helping. There’s something for everyone, family films, horror movies, and superhero adventures like Thunderbolts*
“It feels a little bit like the before times,” Robbins said. “The fact that it’s been happening in April is a really encouraging sign going into the summer.”
With more big movies coming soon, it looks like theaters could have a great summer.
