Marvel’s ‘VisionQuest’ Theme Just Debuted At SDCC and We Love It
Comic Con panels have become one of the best places for composers to finally step out from behind the scenes, and this year’s musical lineup at San Diego did not disappoint. Alongside the usual wave of trailers and costume reveals, several of Marvel’s biggest sonic architects took the stage to pull back the curtain on their work.
That focus on music became one of the more unexpected highlights of the weekend, with a dedicated panel bringing together composers from across the current slate of superhero projects. Fans in attendance got a rare chance to hear pieces of upcoming scores well before their respective shows and films even hit screens.
Among those reveals, Mick Giacchino brought the score for Marvel’s ‘VisionQuest’ to the public for the very first time. The composer debuted the show’s official main theme at San Diego Comic Con, marking the first time audiences have heard any of the music tied to the long-awaited WandaVision follow-up.
‘VisionQuest’ serves as the conclusion to a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued through 2024’s ‘Agatha All Along.’ The series stars Paul Bettany reprising his role as Vision, alongside James Spader returning as Ultron, with the show set to premiere on Disney Plus on October 14.
Giacchino is no stranger to comic book properties, having previously won an Emmy for his work on HBO’s ‘The Penguin’ and contributed additional music to ‘The Batman.’ His growing résumé also includes Disney and Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars, Skeleton Crew,’ giving him a strong pedigree heading into this next major franchise assignment.
The ‘VisionQuest’ reveal came as part of a broader panel spotlighting composers across several of Marvel’s current projects. Kris Bowers and Michael Dean Parsons represented ‘Spider-Noir,’ while Daniel Pemberton discussed his work on both ‘Masters of the Universe’ and ‘Project Hail Mary,’ and Claudia Sarne spoke about scoring ‘Supergirl.’
Moderating the panel was Michael Giacchino, Mick’s father and a longtime Marvel composer in his own right, currently working on ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day.’ During the panel, Michael shared insight into his own approach for the upcoming Spider-Man film, revealing he wanted to make a sad Spider-Man movie by stripping down Peter Parker’s musical theme.
He explained the idea to GamesRadar, describing how he pitched removing extraneous notes from Peter’s theme to represent the character losing the pieces of his old life. That creative concept ties directly into the emotional arc of ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day,’ which finds Peter isolated after the memory-erasing ending of ‘No Way Home.’
Having both father and son composers featured prominently across Marvel’s current slate adds an interesting family dynamic to this year’s convention coverage. With Michael handling one of the studio’s biggest theatrical releases and Mick taking on its next major streaming installment, the Giacchino name is shaping up to be everywhere in Marvel’s music this year.
