Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot Just Landed a Cinematographer With a Résumé That Has Fans Very Excited

Marvel Studios has spent years teasing its long-awaited return to the mutant corner of the comics, and with the film’s cast now largely locked in, attention has shifted to the people building its visual identity behind the camera. Jake Schreier, fresh off directing ‘Thunderbolts*,’ is steering this reboot, and he’s continuing to assemble a crew stacked with talent from outside the usual superhero pipeline.

That approach became clear this week when cinematographer Pat Scola confirmed on his own website that he’ll serve as director of photography on Marvel Studios’ ‘X-Men.’ The announcement quickly spread across fan accounts, with plenty of excitement building around what Scola’s background could mean for the film’s overall look.

Scola isn’t a name typically associated with big-budget blockbusters, and that’s exactly what has fans intrigued. His prior credits include ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ ‘Sing Sing,’ ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ ‘Pig,’ and ‘Lurker,’ a filmography built more around grounded, atmospheric storytelling than large-scale spectacle. This will mark his first superhero film.

That artistic pedigree has fueled speculation about tone. With Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey already appearing in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ ahead of this film’s release, some fans have pointed to that footage as a signal ‘X-Men’ may lean darker and more grounded, closer in spirit to 2000’s original ‘X-Men’ than the more stylized, animated approach some had hoped for in the vein of ‘X-Men ’97.’

Scola joins production designer Kasra Farahani on the crew side, working under Schreier from a script co-written by ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘Thunderbolts*’ writer Joanna Calo. Michael Lesslie, known for ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,’ originally conceived the film’s initial pitch when Marvel first began soliciting takes on the concept back in 2024.

The cast Marvel has revealed so far leans heavily on rising talent. Sink leads as Jean Grey, joined by Kit Connor as Cyclops, newcomer Maya Boyd as Storm, and Inde Navarrette, fresh off her breakout in ‘Obsession,’ as Rogue. Christopher Abbott has also been cast as Professor X, with Adam Driver taking on the role of Mister Sinister and Samara Weaving playing Emma Frost, giving the film a roster that blends established names with performers who’ve broken through more recently.

Production timing has been a bit murkier than the casting news. While several outlets initially reported filming would begin in 2027, more recent crew-sourced reporting suggests shooting could actually start toward the end of this summer, with the location still being finalized between Ireland and Pinewood Studios. Adam Driver appeared to confirm the Pinewood option himself, revealing his casting from a Pinewood soundstage during Marvel’s D23 panel.

‘X-Men’ is positioned as the first film of Marvel’s Phase Seven, arriving May 5, 2028, right after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ closes out the current saga in December 2027. That placement gives the franchise a clean handoff from the mutants’ Fox-era stars, several of whom are returning one final time in December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before the new generation takes over.

With a cinematographer known for prestige indie work now behind the lens and a cast built around some of Hollywood’s most talked-about young performers, Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot is shaping up to be one of the studio’s more artistically ambitious bets in years.
