Mason Thames Breaks a 30-Year-Old Jim Carrey Record at 18 Years Old
Mason Thames has made a huge mark at the box office this year, breaking a record that has stood since 1994. The 18-year-old actor reached three major global milestones over Halloween weekend, thanks to the success of his 2025 films.
Thames first rose to fame with the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which hit theaters on June 13.
He followed that with two major releases in October: Black Phone 2, Blumhouse’s sequel to the hit Joe Hill adaptation, and Regretting You, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel.
Despite a slow Halloween weekend at the domestic box office, Thames’ movies hit impressive numbers.
Black Phone 2 is projected to reach $104 million worldwide, making it one of only six horror films in 2025 to cross the $100 million mark. Regretting You is expected to pass $50 million globally, becoming the third romance movie this year to hit that milestone.
When combined with How to Train Your Dragon’s $636 million, Thames’ 2025 films have collectively earned $790 million worldwide.
That number surpasses $775 million, a threshold that puts Thames in rare company. For perspective, only four individual movies in 2025, Jurassic World Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Ne Zha 2, have earned more than Thames’ cumulative total for the year.
Over his career, movies starring Thames have grossed $952.7 million worldwide, meaning 2025 alone accounts for nearly 83% of his lifetime box office earnings.
This achievement breaks a record that Jim Carrey held since 1994, when he starred in three films that all hit #1 at the domestic box office: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber.
