Mason Thames, Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are heading into complete chaos in their upcoming comedy movie Idiots. The first trailer for the film has been released by IFC Films, showing a wild and ridiculous journey filled with trouble, criminals, and plenty of unexpected moments.

The movie stars Franco, Jackson Jr., Thames, Kiernan Shipka, and Peter Dinklage. The story follows two men, played by Franco and Jackson Jr., who take on what seems like a simple job: transporting a wealthy teenager to a rehab facility. However, things quickly go wrong when they realize the teenager, played by Thames, is much more difficult to handle than they expected.

The official synopsis describes the film as a story about “two unqualified bozos” who are hired to move a rich teen to rehab, only for the job to turn into a dangerous and chaotic adventure.

As seen in the trailer, Thames’ character creates one problem after another, dragging the two men into situations they were never prepared for. Their journey brings them face-to-face with criminals played by Peter Dinklage and Nicholas Braun, while Kiernan Shipka also appears in the movie.

Idiots was written and directed by Macon Blair, who is known for his work on films including The Toxic Avenger and Brothers. Blair also appears in the movie as an actor. According to Blair, the biggest attraction of the film was bringing together a talented group of performers who could fully embrace the movie’s strange and over-the-top style.

“The big spectacle of the movie is the ensemble: it’s a pile-up of dynamite actors going full tilt through broad slapstick comedy, chase movie shenanigans, nasty human darkness and ultimately a hopeful friendship story,” Blair said in a statement.

He added that watching the cast bring their characters to life was one of the highlights of making the movie.

“From the on-fire leads to the scene-stealing cameos, it was a plain delight to watch every single one of these folks work at being Idiots,” Blair said.

The comedy first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January under its original title The S—heads. During a Q&A at the festival, Dave Franco spoke about his connection with O’Shea Jackson Jr. and how their friendship helped them take creative risks while making the movie.

“We feel safe with each other. I just love you, man. And I feel that because of that we’re able to take these huge swings and do weird shit,” Franco said during the event, according to Sundance.

Jackson Jr. also explained why he wanted to join the project. He revealed that Franco’s confidence in him made the role feel even more meaningful.

Are you excited to watch Idiots?

“Dave told me he needed me for a project and he felt like I could kill it,” Jackson Jr. said. “When you hear one of your friends say that, it gets personal — and you feel like you can’t let them down.”

With a mix of comedy, action and a group of recognizable actors, Idiots looks set to deliver a strange and unpredictable road trip adventure. The movie will arrive in theaters on August 28.
