‘Little House on the Prairie’ Cast Members We’ve Sadly Lost Over the Years
‘Little House on the Prairie‘ remains one of the most cherished family dramas in television history, and its massive ensemble cast turned Walnut Grove into a place millions of viewers still consider a second home. Decades after the show wrapped, though, time has caught up with many of the actors who brought the Ingalls family and their neighbors to life on screen.
From the show’s beloved patriarch to guest stars who went on to superstardom elsewhere, several familiar faces from the NBC classic have passed away. Here is a look back at the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ cast members who have died, and the legacies they left behind.
Michael Landon Was the Heart of the Show

Michael Landon starred as Charles Ingalls and also served as the show’s creator and producer, making his presence felt both in front of and behind the camera. Landon died on July 1, 1991, at the age of 54, from pancreatic cancer three months after revealing his diagnosis.
During his final interview with Life magazine, Landon admitted he wished he had taken better care of himself, saying he had “abused” his body over the years. His death remains one of the most emotional losses tied to the series, given how central he was to its identity.
Melissa Gilbert, who played his onscreen daughter Laura, has spoken openly about his influence on her life and career decades later. Gilbert told PEOPLE in February 2025 that “there’s so much that I learned” from Landon, adding that he taught the cast that no one was more special than anyone else on set.
Katherine MacGregor Brought Harriet Oleson to Life

Katherine MacGregor played the show’s most memorable antagonist, Harriet Oleson, turning the character into a fan favorite despite her villainous streak. MacGregor died on November 13, 2018, at the age of 93.
Initially, MacGregor’s character was supposed to make only occasional appearances, but she was promoted to series regular after her performance was so well received by audiences. That popularity cemented her as one of the show’s defining performers.
Following her death, Melissa Gilbert reminisced about her time working alongside MacGregor, sharing that “the thing people outside of our prairie family didn’t know, was how loving and nurturing she was with the younger cast.” The tribute painted a very different picture than the sharp-tongued character audiences knew from ‘Little House on the Prairie.’
Victor French Played the Beloved Isaiah Edwards

Victor French portrayed Isaiah Edwards, one of the Ingalls family’s closest friends and neighbors, and later reunited with Landon on ‘Highway to Heaven.’ French died on June 15, 1989, reportedly from lung cancer.
French had worked with Landon before joining him on the show, appearing in five episodes of ‘Bonanza’ between 1962 and 1971. That earlier collaboration helped pave the way for his role on ‘Little House on the Prairie.’
French appeared in more than 50 episodes and all three television movies as Isaiah Edwards, and he also directed 18 episodes of the series. His contributions extended well beyond acting, shaping the show from behind the camera as well.
Dabbs Greer Was the Town’s Trusted Reverend

Dabbs Greer played Reverend Robert Alden, the spiritual guide of Walnut Grove Township, appearing in dozens of episodes throughout the series’ run. Greer died from heart failure and kidney disease on April 28, 2007, at the age of 90.
Greer appeared in 76 episodes as Reverend Alden, a character based on a real-life historical figure who turned to his faith after tragedy befell his family. Outside of ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ he appeared in over 100 film roles and over 600 TV episodes, including a memorable turn as the older Paul Edgecomb in ‘The Green Mile.’
The show’s official Instagram page later noted that although Reverend Alden wasn’t a character in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, he beautifully captured the spirit of the many kind hearted reverends who guided the family through pioneer life. That description has stuck with fans as one of the sweetest tributes to Greer’s work.
Richard Bull Played Harriet’s Long Suffering Husband

Richard Bull portrayed Nels Oleson, the mild mannered shopkeeper married to Katherine MacGregor’s Harriet, providing some of the show’s gentler comic relief. Bull died in 2014 at the age of 89.
A few years after ‘Little House on the Prairie’ ended, Bull was able to reunite with Michael Landon when he appeared on ‘Highway to Heaven.’ That reunion mirrored the pattern of several cast members who continued working with Landon long after Walnut Grove closed its doors.
Kevin Hagen Was the Town’s Doctor

Kevin Hagen played Dr. Hiram “Doc” Baker, the town physician and veterinarian, beginning with the show’s very first season. Following his diagnosis of esophageal cancer in 2004, Hagen died in July 2005.
After the show ended, Hagen went on to land several roles, including a one man show titled “Playful Dose of Prairie Wisdom,” based directly on his ‘Little House on the Prairie’ character. He spoke fondly about his years playing Doc Baker, noting how comfortable the Western genre felt to him since it dominated television when he began his career.
Merlin Olsen Traded Football for Walnut Grove

Merlin Olsen joined the cast in 1977 as Jonathan Garvey, arriving on the show as an already accomplished NFL star. He died in 2010 at the age of 69 after being diagnosed with mesothelioma the previous year.
Olsen’s transition from professional football to primetime television made him one of the more unusual success stories connected to ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ and his warmth as Garvey helped him become a fan favorite despite joining the series relatively late in its run.
Dub Taylor Brought Character to Walnut Grove

Dub Taylor was a prolific character actor known for decades of work in Westerns and comedies before joining the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ cast. Taylor died from a heart attack on October 3, 1994, at the age of 87.
His long career across film and television made him a familiar face to audiences well before his appearances on the beloved NBC drama, and he remained active in the industry for much of his life.
Billy Barty Made a Memorable Guest Appearance

Billy Barty was known primarily for his comedic film work, often playing off his short stature for humorous effect alongside taller co-stars. Barty died of heart failure on December 23, 2000, at the age of 76.
Barty appeared in two episodes as two different characters on ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ adding to a filmography that included roles in ‘Masters of the Universe,’ ‘Willow,’ and ‘Legend.’ His guest spots on the series were just a small part of a career that spanned from childhood into his later years.
Patty Maloney Played Alice Bates

Patty Maloney portrayed Alice Bates on the series and remained close with several castmates long after the show ended. Maloney died at the age of 89 on March 31, 2025.
Her brother Dave Myrabo told The Hollywood Reporter that Maloney had been in hospice care in Winter Park, Florida, after experiencing several strokes over the years. He also reflected on her spirit, saying that “for a little person growing up in a big world, she did everything she wanted to do.”
Shannen Doherty Grew Up on Walnut Grove

Shannen Doherty joined the cast as Jenny Wilder, Almanzo’s niece, during the show’s ninth and final full season. Doherty appeared in 18 episodes during that final season, which was cancelled in 1983.
Doherty died from cancer on July 13, 2024, at her home in Malibu, California, at the age of 53. She had first been diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2015 and battled the disease for years before her passing.
Her publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed in a statement that Doherty was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie, and asked for privacy so the family could grieve in peace. Long before ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ and ‘Charmed’ made her a household name, it was her time on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ that gave Doherty her start, and fans continue to remember that early chapter of her career fondly.
Which of these ‘Little House on the Prairie’ stars left the biggest mark on your memories of Walnut Grove, and what do you remember most about watching them on screen?
