Massive Doctor Doom Statue Looms Over Japan as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Marketing Goes Giant
Marvel has never been shy about turning a movie release into a spectacle, and the campaign for its next Avengers event is pushing that instinct further than most. Theaters, expos and merchandise aisles around the world have been filling up with Robert Downey Jr.’s villain for months. The latest Doctor Doom statue in Japan is one of the most imposing examples yet.
The studio has treated Doom as the face of the entire rollout, using his green-lit throne and armored look to build an instantly recognizable visual identity. That consistency helps explain why each new installation feels like part of a larger story rather than a one-off stunt. Fans have been following the global tour closely.
Photos shared online on November 1 show a huge statue of Doctor Doom seated on his throne beside a modern building in Japan. The figure wears the metal mask and dark hooded cloak, with glowing green details on the armor, and it’s placed on a wide stepped platform with the Marvel Studios logo visible at the base. In one photo, a visitor in a green Doom-style cape poses at the foot of the display while holding a mask, which gives a sense of how large the statue really is.

The sources I found don’t name the exact location of this particular display. What’s clear from the images is that it’s an outdoor installation rather than a small lobby piece. It’s designed to draw crowds and photographs, which is exactly what it appears to be doing.

This isn’t the first time Japan has been part of the campaign. A statue of Doom recently debuted in the lobby of 109 Cinemas Osaka Expo City as part of a decoration event themed around the eve of ‘Doomsday’. New faction posters have also been displayed in Japan, including one that drew attention for including the X-Men logo alongside the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Wakandan characters.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios also held a “Hero’s Day” event in Tokyo that confirmed ‘Avengers: Endgame’ would return to Japanese theaters ahead of ‘Doomsday’. The same event confirmed that the new film would launch in Japan at the same time as its US release. That marks a notable shift from earlier MCU entries and helps explain why the market is getting so much attention.

Outside Japan, Marvel showed off a giant replica of Doom’s throne at an expo in Shanghai and later brought a version to the Philippines. A large Doom statue was also unveiled in Shanghai, drawing attention for its sheer size, and an AMC theater standee in the United States placed Doom on his throne with a tagline marking the release date. At the Shanghai event, the set reportedly recreated both Doom’s throne room and the X-Mansion.
Fans can also buy their own versions. Iron Studios and Sideshow have released a 1:10 scale ‘Doctor Doom on Throne’ statue priced at $249.99, a larger 1:4 scale Legacy Replica, and a life-sized piece. Beast Kingdom has also revealed a life-sized statue standing about 198 cm tall that is expected to ship in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Japan is one of the biggest international markets for Marvel and for superhero merchandise in general. Walt Disney Japan is handling distribution, and the film is retitled with Japanese lettering there. It opens on December 18, the same day as the US, which means fans in Tokyo won’t have to wait for spoilers to circulate online.
That simultaneous release is part of a broader strategy that has seen Marvel avoid staggered international rollouts. It also gives the studio a reason to invest in region-specific marketing, such as statues, posters and special events. A giant Doom in a public space is an easy way to get people talking.

Part of the reason Doom lends himself to this kind of promotion is his design. The comic-book-style throne imagery, the green lighting and the armored look all translate well into large physical pieces. The mask alone is distinctive enough to be recognized from a distance.
The character’s central role in the film also makes the focus logical. Downey stars as Victor von Doom, and the movie brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and other groups to face him. With that much riding on one villain, it makes sense that the studio would build the campaign around him.
With the movie opening on December 18, more regional displays are likely to appear in the coming weeks. Advance ticket sales have already been reported to be strong, and the film shares its opening date with ‘Dune: Part Three’. For now, the focus is on keeping Doom in front of as many people as possible.
For fans in Japan, the statue offers a chance to take a photo with the film’s central villain before the movie even arrives. For everyone else, it’s another sign of just how large this release is becoming. And if the campaign continues at this pace, a giant Doom may be waiting in a city near you.
Where would you most like to see Marvel install a giant Doctor Doom statue next?
