Matt Damon Lost a Ton of Weight for ‘The Odyssey’—and the Results Are Incredible
Matt Damon went through a dramatic physical transformation to play Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic film The Odyssey. The actor recently opened up about the strict diet and intense training routine that helped him lose a significant amount of weight for the role.
Speaking on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, Damon revealed that Nolan wanted him to look lean while still appearing strong enough to play the legendary Greek hero. The actor said he ended up reaching a weight he had not seen since his teenage years.
“Nolan wanted me lean but strong,” Damon explained. “I used to walk around at between 185 and 200, and I did that whole movie at 167. And I haven’t been that light since high school. So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet.”
Fans first noticed the transformation when photos from the set surfaced online during filming in Europe. Images of Damon wearing armor and showing off a noticeably leaner physique quickly spread across social media, with many viewers surprised by how different he looked.
However, the weight loss was not originally part of a movie plan. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Damon explained that the process actually began when his doctor suggested a major dietary reset.
According to the actor, he spent 90 days avoiding several common foods and drinks. The challenge was far from easy. “I did a gut cleanse with my doctor who told me to take 90 days to not eat gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, or sugar,” Damon said. “It was awful.” Thankfully, he did not go through it alone. Damon said his wife joined him throughout the process, which made the strict lifestyle easier to manage.
“My wife did it with me, which was a huge help,” he shared. The actor admitted that social situations became difficult during those three months because so many normal activities revolve around food and drinks. Still, the results surprised him.
“I got in like the best shape of my life without even trying and I realized I had like this gluten intolerance,” Damon said.
After discovering that gluten was causing issues for him, Damon continued avoiding it, which helped him maintain his leaner physique while preparing for The Odyssey.
Even with the dietary changes, training remained a major part of the process. Damon worked with a trainer and followed a dedicated fitness routine to build the strength needed for the physically demanding role.
The Odyssey marks one of the biggest projects of Damon’s career. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film adapts Homer’s famous ancient Greek epic and follows Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces mythical creatures, dangerous enemies, and countless obstacles while trying to reunite with his wife Penelope.
Damon leads a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
The film is reportedly Nolan’s most expensive project to date, with a budget estimated at $250 million. It was filmed across several countries, including Greece, Italy, Iceland, Morocco, Scotland, and Malta.
With Damon’s dramatic transformation already generating attention, fans are eager to see how he brings the legendary king of Ithaca to life when The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17.
