Matt Reeves Confirms Trilogy Plans and Teases Potential Villain

As everyone knows, Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a massive success. Despite being set in a separate universe from the original DCEU, it seems the film will also remain disconnected from James Gunn’s new DCU, which will feature a different Batman.

Despite the changes sweeping through DC, it looks like Matt Reeves’ standalone series will remain unaffected. There were concerns that his original plans might be abandoned, but it appears Reeves will have the opportunity to develop his vision as intended.

In a recent interview with Collider, Matt Reeves confirmed his commitment to completing his trilogy and continuing to build his unique world. The upcoming Penguin-focused series is expected to be a hit and might directly set up the second film, potentially offering clues about the next villain.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Matt Reeves spoke about his upcoming “Epic Crime Saga,” a series aimed at delving into the intricate and profound corruption of Gotham. Despite lingering uncertainties, Reeves made it clear that he has a well-defined vision for the project:

“[The movie is] going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.”

While fans continue to speculate about the future of Reeves’ trilogy, the director has recently confirmed his dedication to completing the trilogy and ensuring that his Batman universe will be meticulously crafted and unique.

“Yes, that is still the plan. I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned. Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin , that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story, and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power.

Because we know that he’s introduced in The Batman as a kind of mid-level, sort of overlooked, mocked figure, who’s not yet in anyone’s eyes the kingpin we come to know him as in the lore. And so, that was deliberate because I wanted— whereas it wasn’t Batman’s origin story, I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.”

Given this, it appears that The Penguin series will act as a bridge between the two films. Here’s what Reeves had to say about it:

“It’s still the same kind of trajectory of story, but the entry point for where Oz is is now that he’s further along as we enter that story than he would have been if we had started that story in the movie instead of by doing a series. The story plays out over the next weeks that take you toward the end of the year. We don’t play Christmas or New Years, but we’re getting there.”

Christmas? Winter? This might suggest that Matt Reeves is considering Mr. Freeze as the villain for his next film, a theory that has been floating around for a while. While this is just a hint and may not be definitive, it will be intriguing to see how it all unfolds.
