The Batman: Part II is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Director Matt Reeves will return, co-writing the film with Mattson Tomlin.

Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman, joined by Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The sequel will follow Batman as he investigates a new case, further exploring Gotham City’s corruption and division after the flooding events seen in The Batman and The Penguin.

The sequel was first announced in April 2022, but production faced multiple delays due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and Reeves’s focus on perfecting the script. The screenplay was finally completed in June. Filming is expected to start around late April or early May 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England.

Recently, Matt Reeves appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and offered some hints about the film’s villain. He said the villain has “never really been done in a movie before.” Based on his comments, fans have started speculating about who it might be.

Reeves also suggested that the film would focus more on Bruce Wayne than Batman. This opens the possibility for a villain with a personal connection to Bruce. One likely candidate is Tommy Elliot, who becomes the villain Hush.

In the comics, Elliot was a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne who grew to hate the Waynes after they stopped him from killing his father. Hush eventually learns that Bruce is Batman and seeks to destroy both his identities, even undergoing plastic surgery to look like his old friend.

Another potential villain that fits Reeves’s focus on Bruce Wayne is the Court of Owls. This secretive organization consists of Gotham’s richest and most powerful citizens. They manipulate the city from the shadows and have an army of deadly operatives called Talons.

Bringing them into the story would allow the film to explore Gotham’s corruption while keeping the tone grounded, matching the crime drama style Reeves wants.

Reeves confirmed that one character from the first movie won’t appear in the sequel. Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone, who won an Emmy for her role in The Penguin, will not be in The Batman 2 because the film’s story had already progressed beyond her part in the series.

When asked about a third Batman film, Reeves said he doesn’t know if it will happen but expressed interest in joining the larger DC Universe after finishing the Batman trilogy.

This new update gives fans a lot to speculate about. The focus on Bruce Wayne and a personal or shadowy villain could bring a fresh angle to the Batman story. Hush or the Court of Owls would both provide exciting challenges for Batman while deepening the story of Gotham itself.
