The trailer for ‘The Marvels‘ recently dropped, showcasing the movie’s gist. Throughout the trailer, we can see that Monica Rambeau, Carol Danvers, and Kamala Khan are able to spontaneously change places by using their powers. Now in the first few shots, we can see Monica Rambeau, now an astronaut orbiting the so-called S.A.B.E.R. Space Station. We’re used to hearing acronyms in the MCU, and we’re used to Nick Fury being the head of such agencies, but S.A.B.E.R. is something entirely different and just might replace S.W.O.R.D. when it comes to its purpose. Let’s see what MCU’s new S.A.B.E.R. agency is about and how it’s different than S.W.O.R.D.

Editor’s Note: This post has been updated to present you with the newest information regarding the S.A.B.E.R. organization and it’s place in MCU.

S.A.B.E.R. is a new intergalactic organization led by Nick Fury which aims to protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats by creating the most advanced aerospace defense system in the history of mankind. S.A.B.E.R. was launched prior to the events of the ‘Secret Invasion’ as this is where Fury retreated to escape the aftermath of the Snap and recover from his mental trauma. S.A.B.E.R. has a purpose that is strikingly similar to S.W.O.R.D., another agency introduced in the MCU during the ‘WandVision’ series. It’s likewise possible that S.W.O.R.D. will focus on the threats of extra-dimensional origin while S.A.B.E.R. will deal with threats of extraterrestrial origin.

Now that we’ve cleared up what we so far know about S.A.B.E.R. let’s analyze the new trailer in a bit more so we can piece together more info. If you’re interested, stay with us.

The Marvels will take us to space, with Nick Fury taking charge of yet another organization

The upcoming “The Marvels” movie is supposed to be the continuation of the Ms. Marvel series and the Captain Marvel movie, so in that sense, we’re going to see the continuation of their already established stories. We’re also getting another glimpse into Monica Rambeau’s story. We can see Monica is currently an astronaut. She seems to be on assignment in orbit of the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station when she randomly disappears, and Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Khan, takes her place.

Now, we’ve already made a trailer breakdown. If you’re interested in the details regarding the upcoming storyline. What we’re more interested in at the moment is the newly established agency called S.A.B.E.R., which Nick Fury leads.

S.A.B.E.R. seems to be an intergalactic space organization that is supposed to monitor Earth’s extraterrestrial threats, and it’s also the place where Nick Fury hung out while Talos was replacing him back on Earth

The Marvels is not the first time we’ve gotten a glimpse of S.A.B.E.R., as the agency was mentioned in the post-credits scenes of Spider-Man: Far From Home when we found out that Fury is not actually Nick Fury but rather a Skrull in disguise.

Most recently, S.A.B.E.R. was mentioned in Episode 1 of the ‘Secret Invasion’ series, when Agent Ross explains that Fury is currently stationed there, and several scenes later, Agent Rhodey explains that Fury left S.A.B.E.R. due to unknown reasons.

The thing with S.A.B.E.R. is, if the agency is connected to extraterrestrial threats, what’s the purpose of S.W.O.R.D.?

SWORD will most likely be an agency designated to deal with threats of extra-dimensional origin

S.W.O.R.D., or rather Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division, is an agency that debuted in ‘WandaVision.’ The agency monitors the threats of extra-dimensional and extraterrestrial origin. S.W.O.R.D. was founded by Maria Rambeau in 1995 under the United States Government, focusing on manned missions and extraterrestrial operations.

Now we know that phase 5 of MCU will greatly emphasize multidimensional threats, considering that Kang the Conqueror has been introduced to the MCU, and everything shown so far sets him up (or rather his variants) as the next big Thanos-level threat to the MCU. We also know that plenty of other villains, entities, heroes, and the like are now aware that the multiverse exists, which opens up Earth to a new danger of a completely new origin. It’s possible that an entirely new agency is needed to deal with dangers of such proportions.

Since the purpose of S.A.B.E.R. and S.W.O.R.D. seems to be quite similar, is there really a need for two separate agencies to exist within the cinematic Universe?

Yes, there is. S.A.B.E.R. was revealed to be connected solely to extraterrestrial threats, as its the most elaborate and advanced aerodefense system ever built by mankind, especially with the Secret Invasion looming on the horizon. In that case, S.W.O.R.D. will be able to deal with everything else, aka the threats that come from outside of our Universe, and judging by everything, there will be a lot of them.

The new villain in the upcoming ‘The Marvels’ movie will likewise be of alien origin, and judging by that, S.A.B.E.R. would be able to establish itself as the prime organization to deal with such matters.
