MGM+ Makes Final Decision on ‘Godfather of Harlem’ Season 5
MGM+ has confirmed the future of Godfather of Harlem, and it is not what fans were expecting. According to the official announcement from MGM+, the series will not return for a fifth season in the traditional format. Instead, the story will end with a two-hour finale that will wrap up the entire crime drama.
Godfather of Harlem first premiered in 2019 on Epix, which is now known as MGM+. The show stars Forest Whitaker as a fictional version of real-life Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson. Over four seasons, the series built a strong reputation and earned critical praise, holding a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show was created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, who are also known for their work on Narcos. It mixes crime storytelling with real historical figures from the 1960s, including Malcolm X, played by Nigél Thatch, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., played by Giancarlo Esposito.
Instead of continuing into Season 5, MGM+ has decided to bring the story to a close with a final special episode event. The two-hour series finale is set to begin filming in New York later this month. The announcement confirms that Forest Whitaker will return as both the lead actor and an executive producer for the final chapter. Other returning cast members include Ilfenesh Hadera, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, Erik LaRay Harvey, and Rome Flynn.
The network also said that additional guest stars will be announced later, suggesting that the final episodes may include new appearances to help close out the story.
MGM+ shared a short description of what fans can expect from the ending. The final story will focus on Bumpy Johnson facing major pressure from all sides as his criminal empire begins to collapse. He will be forced to deal with enemies from the criminal world, political forces, and personal conflicts at the same time.
The official statement described the finale by saying, “Bumpy Johnson faces the ultimate reckoning as the walls close in around his empire. With enemies converging from every direction—political, criminal, and personal—Bumpy must draw on every alliance, every sacrifice, and every hard lesson earned across five seasons to protect what he has built and the people he loves.”

The statement also explained that the final two hours will show Bumpy reflecting on his life and the legacy he leaves behind after rising from the streets of Harlem to a position of power during a turbulent era.
Forest Whitaker also commented on the end of the series in a statement. He said that playing Bumpy Johnson has been a major part of his career and a deeply meaningful role. He explained that the character allowed him to explore a man dealing with ambition, loyalty, and survival all at once.
MGM+ executive Michael Wright also praised Whitaker’s performance, calling it a key part of the show’s success. He described Whitaker’s work as a standout achievement and referred to Godfather of Harlem as an important series in the network’s lineup of original shows.
The series has also been known for featuring well-known actors in supporting or recurring roles. Over the years, the cast has included names like Paul Sorvino, Tramell Tillman, Method Man, and Whoopi Goldberg, helping the show mix fictional storytelling with historical influence.
With Godfather of Harlem coming to an end, MGM+ will continue focusing on its remaining and upcoming projects. The network currently has several active shows and more in development, as it continues to expand its original programming slate.
For fans of the series, the upcoming two-hour finale will serve as the final chapter in Bumpy Johnson’s story, closing out a crime drama that has run for four seasons and left a strong mark on modern television storytelling.
