The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has turned into one of the biggest movie success stories of 2026, far exceeding early box office expectations and continuing to grow weeks after its release.

According to box office data, the film opened much stronger than analysts predicted. In the United States and Canada, Michael was expected to perform well, but the final numbers were far beyond forecasts. The movie earned a massive $97 million during its opening weekend, beating projections by $28.7 million.

One of the biggest signs of strong audience interest was the movie’s impressive preview-to-weekend growth. Michael earned a 7.7x multiplier from previews to its full opening weekend, showing that interest expanded quickly after early screenings.

The film also delivered a major performance internationally. Overseas markets brought in around $121.6 million during the opening period, pushing the worldwide debut to approximately $218.8 million. The movie achieved these numbers without relying heavily on China, making its global performance even more impressive.

Over the following weeks, Michael continued to show strong staying power. The film reached a worldwide total of $977.5 million by June 29, 2026, putting it just below the $1 billion mark. According to reported box office figures, the movie has earned $370.2 million in the United States and Canada and $607.3 million from international markets.

The success has placed Michael among the biggest biographical movies ever made. It has now surpassed Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biographical film in history. It also passed Bohemian Rhapsody to become the biggest musical biopic ever released.

The movie has also become the biggest success in Lionsgate’s history, overtaking The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which previously held the studio’s top worldwide box office record.

The strong opening was clear from the beginning. During Wednesday and Thursday previews, Michael earned $12.6 million in North America. Its first full day brought in $39.5 million, setting a new record for the biggest opening day ever for a biographical film and the highest opening day of 2026 at the time.

The film’s $97.2 million domestic debut broke records for both biographical and musical movies, beating Straight Outta Compton’s previous record of $60.2 million.

International audiences also responded strongly. The movie opened with record-breaking numbers in several countries and earned $24.4 million from IMAX screenings alone, marking the biggest IMAX opening ever for a musical biographical film.

With Michael still earning money at the box office, fans are already looking ahead to Michael Part II. After the first movie’s huge success, expectations for the sequel will likely be much higher.

A follow-up film could benefit from the first movie’s strong word of mouth, massive global audience, and renewed interest in Michael Jackson’s story. If the sequel captures the same level of attention, it could potentially open even bigger than the first movie.

For now, Michael remains one of the biggest box office stories of the year, proving that audiences are still showing up for major music legends brought to the big screen.
