‘Miraculous’ Creator Confirms Live-Action Series Is Officially Moving Forward

French animation has quietly built one of the most successful global franchises in kids entertainment over the past decade, and the man behind it just gave fans their clearest update yet on where the universe is headed next.

Jeremy Zag co-created ‘Miraculous, Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir’ through his studio Zag, turning the animated series into a franchise that has traveled the world across television, film, games and merchandise since its debut.

That global reach earned Zag a notable honor this week, being named Deadline’s 2026 French TV Disruptor at Unifrance’s Rendez Vous market, an award presented at the historic Montivilliers Abbey in Normandy, France. Ahead of receiving the recognition, Zag sat down with Deadline to discuss his work and reveal fresh details about what’s coming next for the franchise, confirming that a live-action Miraculous series is officially moving forward.

Zag confirmed the production team is already in place for the project, telling Deadline, “We’re going to keep the DNA of what people love about Miraculous,” while adding that the producers and writers are already assembled and actively working on the show.

Zag also gave an update on his other major project in development, an animated feature called ‘Melody’ starring Katy Perry. Zag explained that Perry has taken on a significant creative role in the film beyond just voicing the lead character, telling Deadline she is deeply involved in shaping both the music and the overall story.

According to Zag, the film centers on a young girl who wants to sing but struggles to believe in herself, a theme he described as central to the project. He also revealed the team is collaborating with Gary Trousdale, the acclaimed director behind Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ adding another layer of animation pedigree to the production.

Zag’s comments reflect a broader philosophy that’s shaped his career, describing his consistent approach of building entire universes around his projects rather than standalone properties, spanning television, film, gaming and merchandising all at once. That strategy has clearly paid off with Miraculous, whose ongoing success across multiple platforms has made it one of the most recognizable animated franchises to come out of France in recent memory.

With a live-action series now confirmed to be in active development and ‘Melody’ continuing to take shape alongside Katy Perry’s creative involvement, Zag’s slate looks set to keep expanding well beyond the animated world that first made his name. Given how much of his career has centered on building lasting franchises, both projects appear to be the next chapters in that ongoing ambition.
