‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Has Big Opening Weekend at Box Office

Paramount’s newest movie Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning had a strong start at the box office this Memorial Day weekend. It earned $24.8 million on its opening day, making it the best opening day ever for a Mission: Impossible film.
The movie played in 3,857 theaters across the U.S. and is expected to make around $63 million over the three-day weekend. For the full four-day Memorial Day weekend, it could earn about $77 million. This would beat the series’ previous best opening, which was Mission: Impossible — Fallout in 2018 with $61 million.
Internationally, the movie has already made $75.9 million, adding to its global total.
Even though Mission: Impossible is in second place this weekend behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake, it is still a major success for Paramount. It also benefits from higher ticket prices thanks to IMAX and premium theater formats.
This movie had a huge budget, about $400 million. That makes it one of the most expensive movies ever made. The cost was high because of COVID delays, Hollywood strikes, and inflation over the long production period. Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie spent years working on it. McQuarrie also directed the last three movies in the franchise.
The studio is hoping this film performs better than the last one, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, which had a strong opening but slowed down later. It made $571 million worldwide, which wasn’t enough to be a big hit.
Critics gave The Final Reckoning good reviews, although not as glowing as past entries in the series. Audiences gave it an “A-” grade through Cinema Score, showing they still enjoy the franchise.
While Lilo & Stitch is leading the box office and could set a new record for Memorial Day weekend, Mission: Impossible is holding its own. It’s helping make this one of the biggest Memorial Day weekends for movie theaters in history.
Overall, it’s a strong return for Tom Cruise’s famous action series — and fans still seem excited for the high-stakes stunts and fast-paced action that Mission: Impossible always delivers.
