Barton reportedly sits alongside six other finalists on the shortlist, including Jack Lowden, Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, Paul Mescal, Jack O’Connell, and Harris Dickinson.

Villeneuve has reportedly expressed a preference for casting an unknown British actor, a strategy that lines up neatly with Barton’s relatively low profile. Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams has previously explained the thinking behind that approach, noting that “it is absolutely essential that [Bond] retains a total enigma,” since established stars already carry public recognition that can work against the character’s mystique.

That logic tracks with franchise history, given that most actors who’ve played Bond, from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, were relatively unknown before landing the role. It’s a pattern the producers appear determined to repeat rather than break with a big-name star this time around.

The prolonged search reflects just how much pressure surrounds this particular casting decision, given how definitively Daniel Craig’s tenure redefined the character for a modern audience.
