‘Monarch’ Prequel Series Recruits a Familiar Face for Its Cold War Mission

Apple TV’s corner of the MonsterVerse has been growing steadily, and it looks nothing like the city-flattening spectacle of the Godzilla and Kong movies. The focus is on the people who live in the shadow of the Titans, and that has given the franchise a more grounded, character-driven flavor.

Wyatt Russell previously appeared in Apple’s first MonsterVerse series, ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ sharing the role of Lee Shaw with his father, Kurt Russell. Now, Wyatt gets a series all to himself, created by ‘Legacy of Monsters’ executive producer Joby Harold.

The latest casting news adds some serious star power to that solo outing. Giancarlo Esposito has been cast in the untitled prequel, as reported by DiscussingFilm, and he and Tim Robbins will both guest star in the new MonsterVerse series in the works at Apple TV. The reports I found don’t say who either actor will play, so that remains one of the show’s bigger mysteries.

The setup gives the guest stars plenty to work with. The prequel follows a younger Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines. His goal is to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan that could turn the tide of the Cold War.

Esposito and Robbins are joining a deep bench. The cast already includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbaek, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic. Brady and Asbaek were announced as series regulars earlier this year, with their characters kept under wraps.

That is a lot of recognizable talent for a spinoff, and it suggests Apple is treating this as more than a side project. Part of the reason may be the bigger plan behind it. Harold was tapped not only to showrun the spinoff but also to oversee the entire MonsterVerse franchise for Apple.

The prequel was first announced in December 2025. It is part of an overall deal between Apple and Legendary that will allow them to further expand the MonsterVerse. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita will executive produce on behalf of Toho, which owns the Godzilla IP.

Wyatt Russell is also deeply involved behind the scenes. He stars in the series and serves as an executive producer alongside Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures. That gives the project a strong creative anchor, since he already knows how to play Lee Shaw.

Timing is still fuzzy, though the wait may not be too long. One outlet expects more news next year, including a title and further cast details, and suspects the show will arrive in 2027. Apple has not confirmed a release window.

Setting the story in 1984 also opens some creative doors. The first ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ series used its flashback timeline to show how Lee Shaw became the man the show’s modern-day scenes introduce. The first season had major stretches set during the late 1950s with Russell’s young Lee as the main character. Moving the clock forward to the Cold War lets the franchise explore how Titans might have fit into superpower paranoia.

For now, the Esposito casting is another sign that Apple wants this prequel to feel like an event. A Cold War thriller with a Titan-sized secret at its center, a stacked ensemble and two high-profile guest stars is a strong pitch. Fans will be watching closely to see who Esposito and Robbins end up playing.
