‘The Gentlemen’ Star Giancarlo Esposito Wants to Trade Marvel Villainy for a Chilling DC Role
Giancarlo Esposito has built a career playing some of the most memorable antagonists in film and television, from his Emmy-nominated turn as Gus Fring on ‘Better Call Saul’ to his more recent stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That track record has made him a natural candidate whenever fans start dreaming up casting wishlists for comic book villains.
His latest comments suggest he’d be more than willing to make the jump across the aisle from Marvel to DC. Esposito has spent the past year bouncing between franchise possibilities, and now he’s set his sights on a very specific icy target within James Gunn’s growing DC Universe.
Speaking with IGN at FanExpo Cleveland, Esposito revealed that he would love to play Mr. Freeze in a future DC project, name-checking the iconic Batman villain as a dream role he’d jump at the chance to bring to life.
Mr. Freeze, also known as Victor Fries, has long stood out among Batman’s rogues gallery for his tragic backstory rather than pure menace. The character’s motivations are rooted in a desperate effort to save his terminally ill wife, Nora, giving the role an emotional weight that goes beyond typical supervillain theatrics.
That kind of layered characterization plays directly into Esposito’s strengths as a performer, given his history of finding humanity within menacing characters throughout his career. His most obvious opportunity to bring Mr. Freeze to life would be in ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ the upcoming Batman film that exists within Gunn’s DCU and is separate from Matt Reeves’s ongoing ‘The Batman’ universe.
Esposito’s interest in DC comes shortly after his turn as Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder, in ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ As the leader of the Serpent Society, his performance in that film earned him notable praise for its intensity, further cementing his reputation as a go-to actor for comic book antagonists.
That Marvel role apparently hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for jumping to the other major comic book universe. If anything, his comments suggest an actor eager to keep exploring villainous roles across as many franchises as possible, rather than sticking loyally to one cinematic universe.
Esposito’s interest in DC villainy isn’t limited to Mr. Freeze, either. He’s also expressed enthusiasm about playing a specific X-Men villain, further underlining just how eager he is to keep adding comic book roles to his résumé regardless of which studio is calling.
No official talks or casting announcements have been made connecting Esposito to Mr. Freeze or any other DC role at this point. Still, his openly stated interest gives fans plenty to speculate about as Gunn continues building out his corner of the DCU, which already includes projects like Mike Flanagan’s ‘Clayface’ currently in development.
That expanding slate of Batman-adjacent villain projects suggests Gunn is willing to give individual rogues dedicated spotlight treatment rather than cramming them all into a single ensemble film. If that approach continues, it only strengthens the case for bringing in a performer like Esposito, who has repeatedly shown he can carry a villain role well beyond a brief cameo appearance.
Casting decisions for Gunn’s DCU have generally leaned toward performers capable of balancing spectacle with genuine emotional depth, a pattern that fits neatly with what Esposito could bring to Mr. Freeze. Whether or not the studio takes him up on the offer, his public campaigning adds his name to an increasingly crowded conversation about who might eventually don the character’s iconic ice suit.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether Esposito’s not-so-subtle pitch actually lands him the role, or whether another actor ultimately gets tapped to bring Mr. Freeze into Gunn’s DCU.
It’s also worth remembering that Mr. Freeze has a complicated history on screen, with previous portrayals ranging from campy to genuinely acclaimed depending on the era and format. Esposito stepping into the role would give the character a fresh interpretation shaped by an actor known more for restrained menace than theatrical excess, a tonal shift that could work well within the more grounded direction Gunn has signaled for his DCU films.
