‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Score Debuts on Rotten Tomatoes — Early Reactions Are Here
Mortal Kombat II has made its first mark with critics. The sequel has opened with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 50 reviews, showing a generally positive but mixed response.
The film continues the story from the 2021 reboot and brings back many familiar faces. Lewis Tan returns as Cole Young, alongside Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, and Ludi Lin. New additions include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. The movie is directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater.
The story centers on Earthrealm’s fighters as they face a major threat led by Shao Kahn. The stakes are higher this time, with the fate of their world on the line.

Early reactions from critics highlight the film’s action as its strongest feature. Many reviews praise the fight scenes and intense visuals. One critic noted, “Mortal Kombat 2 does precisely what a film based on the series should do best, which is provide staggering martial arts action and stomach-flipping gore set against the backdrop of a plot that is monumentally dumb and, nonetheless, entertaining.”
Another review described the movie as a fun experience, saying it feels like filmmakers enjoying the characters and world. Some critics also called it a clear improvement over the first film, especially in terms of action and scale.
However, not all feedback is fully positive. Several reviewers pointed out issues with the story and large cast. One critic said, “With an overabundance of characters and barely enough interest in properly developing them… the kicks and punches fail to land.” Others mentioned that the plot can feel messy or hard to follow at times.
Despite these concerns, many agree the film delivers what fans expect from the franchise. It leans heavily into combat, spectacle, and fan service. The movie premiered in late April 2026 and is set for a wide theatrical release on May 8, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling distribution. A third film is already in development.
This result is not surprising. “Mortal Kombat” has always been more about action than story, and it seems the sequel follows the same path. Fans of the games will likely enjoy it, while others may find it less engaging. The score shows it sits somewhere in the middle, doing some things well but not everything.
