‘NCIS: Origins’ Reunites Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly on Screen for the First Time in 10 Years
Some television partnerships define an entire era of a show. For ‘NCIS‘, that partnership was a gruff, silent leader and the wisecracking agent who spent years trying to impress him. Fans have been waiting a long time to see Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo in the same frame again.
That wait is now almost over. CBS has confirmed that Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will reunite on screen in an upcoming episode of ‘NCIS: Origins’. The pair worked together on the flagship series for 13 seasons, and the new episode will mark the first time they have shared a scene since Weatherly’s exit.
The reunion episode airs Tuesday, October 20, on CBS and streams on Paramount+. It is Season 3, Episode 3, titled ‘Return of the Mack’, and a first-look photo has already been released showing Harmon’s Gibbs, with a backpack slung over one shoulder, smiling at Weatherly’s suited DiNozzo in a corridor.
According to CBS, the reunion finds Gibbs returning to NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C., to enlist the help of new director Tony DiNozzo. The reason is dramatic: Gibbs was shot by unknown assailants in the season premiere of ‘Origins’ on October 6. It is a notable change of roles, with the agent who once took orders from Gibbs now sitting at the top of the agency.
Gibbs is also set to visit Woody, played by Bobby Moynihan, in the present day in Episode 2 to run a fingerprint he took off his own neck during the premiere. The mystery is clearly a serious one, and it sets up the reunion as more than a nostalgic cameo. It gives both characters a real case to work.
The last time Harmon and Weatherly appeared together on screen was when Weatherly left ‘NCIS’ in the Season 13 finale. Since then, the franchise has changed substantially, but the bond between their characters has remained one of its most beloved. The reunion is being billed as historic by outlets across the industry.
Weatherly has returned as DiNozzo in the flagship series, beginning with the Season 24 premiere on October 6, following the Paramount+ cancellation of ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’. In that series, Tony has been appointed director of NCIS. That sets up a neat symmetry with the ‘Origins’ episode, where Gibbs comes to him for help.

Harmon, who also serves as an executive producer on ‘Origins’, appears in all of the show’s third season. His role is part of a present-day mystery tied to his character’s days at Camp Pendleton in the 1990s. That structure lets the series connect its prequel story to the modern timeline, using the older Gibbs as a bridge.
‘Origins’ follows a young Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, in the early 1990s, years before the events of ‘NCIS’, and Harmon narrates the series. The show also stars Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Diany Rodriguez and Caleb Foote. Having Harmon on screen in the present day gives the prequel a new dimension.
Gibbs and DiNozzo were at the center of the franchise for more than a decade, with their dynamic combining warmth, humor and tension. The head slap, the rules and the unspoken respect between the 2 characters became part of the show’s identity. Seeing them together again taps into a deep reserve of goodwill.
The reunion also reflects the way the ‘NCIS’ universe has evolved. It now includes a flagship series, a prequel and past spin-offs, and moments like this one let the different branches speak to each other. For a franchise that has been on the air for more than 2 decades, the ability to surprise audiences is a notable achievement.

CBS has released a teaser for the episode, which has been promoted as a reunion that has been a decade in the making. Details about the case remain limited, and the network has not said how long the 2 characters share the screen. Fans will be watching for callbacks to their earlier partnership, including the humor and the tension that defined it.
With the episode just days away, the anticipation is high. Whether the reunion becomes a one-time event or opens the door to more crossovers remains to be seen. For now, the focus is on a single hour of television that long-time viewers have wanted for years.
