Netflix has officially confirmed that “Grown Ups 3” is in development, bringing Adam Sandler back to one of his most popular comedy franchises.

The announcement was made during Netflix’s upfront presentation in New York City on Wednesday, according to the streamer. The new film continues the story that began with the 2010 comedy “Grown Ups,” which became a major box office hit and later led to a 2013 sequel.

The upcoming third movie will once again be led by Adam Sandler, who is also co-writing the script with longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy. The film will be directed by Kyle Newacheck, who recently worked with Sandler on “Happy Gilmore 2,” another Netflix comedy success.

Netflix has not shared any story details or casting confirmations yet, but the project is expected to reunite much of the original creative team. Sandler is also producing the film alongside Jackie Sandler, Jack Giarraputo, Kevin Grady, and Judit Maull, while Herlihy serves as both writer and producer.

The original “Grown Ups” film was released in 2010 by Sony Pictures and featured a large ensemble cast including Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Salma Hayek. The movie followed a group of childhood friends who reunite after the death of their basketball coach. It went on to earn more than $270 million worldwide.

A sequel arrived in 2013, adding new cast members like Andy Samberg, Taylor Lautner, and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Director Kyle Newacheck’s involvement is also notable because of his recent work with Sandler. He directed “Happy Gilmore 2,” which became one of Netflix’s biggest comedy releases. His background also includes work on “Workaholics” and the Netflix film “Murder Mystery,” starring Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

There had been rumors for years that a third “Grown Ups” movie could happen. Kevin James previously suggested that fans should “keep hope alive,” while earlier comments from director Dennis Dugan in 2015 indicated that discussions had been happening but nothing was confirmed at the time.

Screenwriter Tim Herlihy also recently spoke about the possibility of more sequels in Sandler’s film catalog. He said, “This throws it open.” He added, “Definitely not sure we want to just be in the business of doing sequels to movies. But the response to this and the way people have embraced it definitely makes it more exciting, if we were to do that.”

For now, Netflix has not announced a release date for “Grown Ups 3,” and casting details remain under wraps. But the confirmation alone signals that one of Sandler’s most recognizable comedy franchises is officially coming back.
