Netflix Pours Out One Last Round for Serenity’s Favorite Trio After a Surprise Decision
Few streaming comforts have been as dependable as ‘Sweet Magnolias’. The small-town drama follows a trio of lifelong best friends who also co-own a spa in their sleepy hometown of Serenity, South Carolina. It has been the kind of warm, low-stakes binge that viewers return to when they need something gentle.
The series is based on the book series by Sherryl Woods and stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley. Since debuting in 2020, it has generated 100 million views and appeared 14 times in Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10 across more than 60 countries. Even as recently as June, it ranked as the streamer’s second-most-watched TV series while its future was still undecided.
Now the future of ‘Sweet Magnolias’ has been settled, and fans are not thrilled. Netflix has canceled the drama after five seasons, according to Deadline. That means no sixth season, closing the book on 50 episodes.
The reason behind the decision is what has people talking. Netflix executives had to choose between a sixth and final season or moving forward with a new series from Garcia Swisher and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, and the streamer picked the new drama. The timing came down to the wire, since options on the cast members were set to expire Thursday night, the same night the new series got its order, and the cancellation followed the next day.
That new project is ‘Ladies of the House’. It stars Garcia Swisher and follows a wife and two adult daughters who take over a family winery after the owner’s death, as they work through their issues while facing challenges with the business, their extended family and the men in their lives. It is a familiar mix of family, friendship and small-business drama, which should make the transition easier for loyal viewers.
Still, the way ‘Sweet Magnolias’ ended makes the loss sting a little more. The latest run gave most of its main characters effectively happy endings, aside from Dana Sue and Ronnie, whose marriage imploded. Dana Sue suggested a break after discovering that his negligence was responsible for their house burning down, and an old enemy was already showing interest in her. Netflix chose not to give fans a proper final season to wrap things up.
The goodbyes have been heartfelt. Cast member Jamie Lynn Spears thanked the producers, cast, crew, Netflix and the viewers who became part of the ‘Sweet Mags’ family. With Dana Sue and Ronnie’s marriage left hanging and Serenity’s story cut short, will you follow Garcia Swisher into the vineyard for ‘Ladies of the House’, or do you still feel these friends deserved one last toast together?
