Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Sequel Introduces Its New Freshman Class Ahead of Premiere

Few sitcoms from the late 1980s and early 1990s have maintained the kind of cultural resonance that ‘A Different World‘ still carries decades after its original run ended. The NBC series, which followed students navigating life at the fictional historically Black college Hillman, became a genuine touchstone for representation on television, one that fans have spent years hoping to see revisited.

That hope first gained real momentum back in 2012, when original cast member Debbie Allen suggested a reboot on social media and watched the idea explode across Facebook and Twitter almost overnight. It took more than a decade for that fan enthusiasm to actually translate into a greenlit production, with Netflix officially confirming a sequel series was in development back in August 2024.

That long-awaited return to Hillman College is now just days away. Netflix has introduced the incoming freshman class for its ‘A Different World’ sequel series, unveiling character posters for Deborah, Rashida, Shaquille, Amir, Hazel, and Kojo ahead of the show’s premiere on September 24, exactly 39 years to the day after the original series first debuted in 1987.

The series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. As Deborah begins her freshman year at Hillman, she finds herself navigating the weight of her parents’ legacy while forging her own identity among a new generation of students.

Joining Deborah at Hillman is Rashida Duvall, played by Alijah Kai, a first-generation criminal justice major serving as Deborah’s roommate. Shaquille Johnson, played by Cornell Young IV, rounds out the group as a five-star athlete and the son of Ron Johnson, a classmate of Deborah’s own parents, giving the character an added layer of connection to the show’s original cast.

The remaining new students include Amir Rodale, played by Jordan Aaron Hall, a sharp psychology major described as being better at fixing everyone else’s problems than his own, and Hazel Henry, played by Kennedi Reece, a church-raised small-town student working to define her own values away from home. Kojo Achebe, played by Chibuikem Uche, completes the freshman lineup as a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to pursue his creative vision.

Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series and returns to helm the sequel’s pilot, spoke about the significance of bringing this new generation of Hillman students to screen. She described the value of showing young people thriving on a college campus, making friends, and navigating love in an authentic way, calling it central to what “A Different World” has always represented, sentiments she shared in comments reported by Netflix Tudum.

The sequel also brings back a substantial portion of the original ensemble, with Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprising their roles as Whitley and Dwayne, alongside Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson and Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks. Additional returning cast members include Charnele Brown, Jenifer Lewis, Dawnn Lewis, and Glynn Turman, giving longtime fans plenty of familiar faces alongside the new freshman class.

Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer on the project, working alongside original series creatives including Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. The single-camera comedy will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, all set to arrive on Netflix simultaneously when the series premieres.

With production having wrapped earlier this year in Atlanta and a trailer already generating significant buzz among fans of the original series, ‘A Different World’ appears well-positioned to introduce Hillman College to an entirely new generation of viewers. Given how closely this new class ties back to the original show’s beloved characters, the sequel seems designed to honor its predecessor’s legacy while carving out its own distinct identity.
