Netflix’s Buried Sci-Fi Gem Is Finally Getting Its Moment, Nearly a Decade Later

Netflix’s early years weren’t just about building a library of splashy originals; some of the platform’s most memorable finds came from acquiring movies that other studios had quietly given up on. That underdog strategy is paying off again nearly a decade later, as one of those rescued films suddenly finds itself back in the spotlight.

That film is ‘Spectral,’ a military science-fiction thriller that’s currently pulling in fresh attention on Netflix almost ten years after its original release. The film blends war-zone action with hard science-fiction concepts, and its unexpected resurgence is proving that a strong premise can still find an audience long after its initial launch.

‘Spectral’ follows Mark Clyne, a DARPA engineer played by James Badge Dale, who’s sent into an active war zone to investigate strange phenomena captured by the hyperspectral goggles he designed. He joins forces with an elite special forces unit confronting mysterious, seemingly indestructible apparitions, and what initially looks like a ghost story quickly reveals itself as something far more scientifically grounded and considerably more dangerous.

The film’s road to Netflix wasn’t originally the plan. According to Collider, ‘Spectral’ was initially set for a theatrical release through Legendary and Universal, carrying a hefty budget of around $70 million, before Universal ultimately pulled it from its planned theatrical run. Netflix stepped in and acquired the distribution rights, releasing the film worldwide in December 2016.

That decision has quietly paid off in the years since. While Netflix has never disclosed viewership figures for the film, as the platform rarely does for any of its titles, ‘Spectral’ has held onto a solid 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has remained available on the service for nearly a decade, a rare feat of longevity for a licensed acquisition rather than a marquee original.

Critics at the time of release noted the film’s willingness to lean into scientific explanation rather than pure supernatural mystery, something that set it apart from typical genre fare. One review described it as devoted to “rhapsodizing about science” while still delivering the tension and battle sequences fans expect from a war-set thriller. Another called it “a cracking sci-fi military mystery that apes from various genres whilst yet never feels overly familiar,” praising both its ensemble cast and its blockbuster-level visual effects.

Not every reaction to the film was glowing on release, and ‘Spectral’ has always carried a bit of a mixed reputation among genre fans, with some viewers finding its technical dialogue overly dense or its central conflict underdeveloped. But that divisiveness hasn’t stopped the film from building a loyal following over the years, with fans of hidden streaming gems continuing to point newcomers toward it as an underrated pick.

Part of what’s kept ‘Spectral’ relevant is its unusual approach to blending genres. The film pulls from war movies, alien invasion thrillers and hard science fiction all at once, delivering a premise built around apparitions that are eventually revealed to have a scientific explanation rather than a purely supernatural one, giving the story a grounded edge that distinguishes it from typical genre entries.

With the film now experiencing a fresh wave of discovery nearly ten years after it first streamed, ‘Spectral’ is proving that Netflix’s early instinct to rescue this project from Universal’s shelf was the right call.
