Netflix has shared some fresh news about its upcoming Ghostbusters animated series during the Annecy 2025 Film Festival. The show is now fully in production, though there’s still no official release date announced. This series is part of Netflix’s Family Spectacle lineup and is being made with Sony Pictures Animation.

Dominique Bazay, Netflix’s Director of Animation for Families and Kids, introduced the series at Annecy. She explained that Ghostbusters is grouped with other big family shows like Minecraft, Clash of Clans, and Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. Bazay said the goal is to create animation that appeals to everyone, from kids to grandparents, whether they watch together or on their own.

She said, “These spectacle shows are a giant bet for us. We want to make spectacular animation for the entire family, for parents, for kids, for teens, for grandparents, for young adults, whether they watch together or apart.” She also praised Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind hits like Mitchells vs. the Machines and the Spider-Verse movies, adding, “This is Ghostbusters like you’ve never seen it.”

Here’s What’s Coming to Netflix in July 2025

One of the biggest announcements was that Ben Hibon will be leading the project as executive producer and showrunner. He gained fame for his MTV Asia short Codehunters, and directed the memorable Tale of Three Brothers sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, which won a British Animation Award. Hibon has also worked with Zack Snyder on Sucker Punch and was a creative lead on Nickelodeon’s Star Trek: Prodigy.

In a video message played at the festival, Hibon introduced the new Ghostbusters series with several concept art images in the background. He said, “Ghostbusters has always been a really surprising blend of horror, comedy, sci-fi and fantasy.” He went on to explain their creative vision: “We want to keep the character and the story totally grounded in a time and place that felt real. It has grit, it has texture, it has vibrancy.”

Hibon made it clear that they are not aiming for photorealism but instead want to use light, color, and texture to make the animation feel real and tactile. He added, “My mission is unbound by reality. That itself allows us to go much broader, in some ways much bigger.”

He promised that the show would be bold and visually striking, with unique ghost designs and inventive animation techniques. “We will be able to push the envelope, really elevate content, and really surprise audiences,” Hibon said.

Although the concept art shown at the festival hasn’t been released publicly, it gave a good sense of the style and tone. The images showed four young main characters silhouetted against a cityscape, as well as scenes inside and outside New York City featuring heroes and monsters.

One piece showed a character with a glowing proton pack inside a room full of boxes, hinting at a classic Ghostbusters vibe. The animation style seems inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which makes sense given Sony Pictures Animation’s involvement.

The series is executive produced by Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Amie Karp from Ghost Corps, Inc., working closely with Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation.

While there’s no release date yet, fans can expect something special from this new take on Ghostbusters. For more news from the Annecy Film Festival and updates on Netflix’s animation projects, keep an eye on official announcements and entertainment news sites.
