Netflix’s New ‘Monster’ Installment Finally Gets a Release Date, and Fans Won’t Have to Wait Long

True crime anthology television has become one of streaming’s most reliable success stories, with each new installment seemingly finding a way to reignite public fascination with cases that have haunted American history for generations. Ryan Murphy’s genre-defining series has led that charge, tackling infamous killers one season at a time with unflinching detail and starry casts.

Following the recent premiere of the franchise’s third installment focused on Ed Gein, fans have been eagerly speculating about which case would headline the next chapter. That question has now been definitively answered, and the story chosen carries more than a century of cultural fascination behind it.

‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story‘ is officially coming to Netflix on September 17, giving fans a firm date to circle for the franchise’s fourth season. The series will dramatize the notorious 1892 case of Lizzie Borden, the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe in their Fall River home, a crime that captivated the nation and cemented her place in American pop culture folklore for more than a century.

Ella Beatty, daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, leads the cast in the title role, marking her third screen credit following appearances in ‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans’ and the upcoming ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.’ Beatty reacted to her casting on Instagram, writing, “Cannot believe I get to work with geniuses such as these.”

She’s joined by a stacked ensemble that includes Rebecca Hall as Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby Borden, and Charlie Hunnam, who previously starred as Ed Gein in season three, returning to the franchise as Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden. Vicky Krieps rounds out the series regulars as Bridget Sullivan, the family’s live-in maid, while Joey Pollari plays John Morse.

Jessica Barden and Billie Lourd join the cast in recurring roles, with Barden playing Nance O’Neill, an actress who was reportedly close with Lizzie, and Lourd playing Emma Borden, Lizzie’s older sister. The casting marks the first time the anthology series has brought back actors from a previous season in new roles, a notable shift for the franchise.

The historical case at the center of the series remains one of America’s most enduring unsolved mysteries. On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were discovered brutally murdered in their home, struck repeatedly with an axe, with Lizzie ultimately standing trial for the killings before being acquitted. The case’s ambiguity, combined with the shocking brutality of the crime, has fueled decades of adaptations across film, television, and stage.

This isn’t the first time the Borden case has captured Hollywood’s attention either. The story has previously been dramatized in projects including ‘The Lizzie Borden Chronicles’ starring Christina Ricci and the 2018 film ‘Lizzie,’ which starred Chloë Sevigny, who also appeared in ‘Monster’ season two as Kitty Menéndez. That overlap speaks to just how deeply this particular true crime story continues to resonate with audiences and filmmakers alike.

With production having gotten underway following the recent premiere of ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ the franchise shows no signs of slowing its rapid-fire release schedule.
